We had a bit of a moderator meeting at the Naki Mega(Mini)Meet around the Tech, FAQ and General sections.

We would like to call on you smart cookies out there to submit How-To's and other tech info so that we can compile good sections

we dont want "my mates brothers cousin brought it off this guy on trademe and he said this", we want hard working facts, backed up by a this doesnt work etc

this info will be dynamic and we can update and change it as needed

this has come about because some of the sections are full of utter rubbish and the same thing is covered 50million times!

spanks a million

The one thing i do know is 4age rods, so could post this for ya's. Comes in helpful as not alot of people have pulled apart every version of 4age, which i have had the er-hm, 'pleasure' of doing (mostly due to blowing up):

"There are 6 types of rods, i have had a set of all but one (early mr2 ones)

1. early mr2 38mm big, 18mm gudgeon
2. bluetop, 40mm big, 18mm gudgeon
3. redtop tvis, 42mm big, 20mm gudgeon, lightened
4. redtop non tvis, 42mm big, 20mm gudgeon, full cast
5. Silver top, 42mm big, 20mm gudgeon, similar build to bluetop
6. Blacktop, 42mm big, 20mm gudgeon, tiny tiny tiny lightweight ones.

ae101 map and ae92 map gze run silvertop rods
ae92 early and mr2 run retop non tvis"

yeah? nah?

I made a step by step manual conversion guide with photos when I did the conversion on my Supra.

The process is basically the same for most RWD cars I'd suspect...

As I posted a week ago in my thread, different techniques to replace gearbox oil, locations of filler and drain holes on popular boxes etc would help alot of people out I would think. I felt kind of stupid asking where the holes were, so a place where the locations are obviously stated might make some people stop feeling so stupid!

id like to see proff of the 38mm crank and rods please.
itll be the first iv ever heard of it.

also not all smallport 4age/map ae92 gze rods are the same as the silvertop ones.
they change from the early big ones is later than the small port head change.

what should be happening is a clean up of the FAQ section, as in organise it, put things in sections so ppl know where to look. at the mo is a fcuking mess.

then when decent stuff is posted in tech, it gets FAQd. often thats not being done as well

as above, ive only seen one case, no proof, so i guess it didnt happen

Mr Revhead wrote:also not all smallport/afm ae92 gze rods are the same as the silvertop ones.

thats exactly what I said!!!

Mr Revhead wrote:they change from the early big ones is later than the small port head change.

That makes no sense. Silvertop rods in silver top, and in map gze.

smallport gze have silvertop rods, smallport NON gze have early gze rods.

I wish people would read what i wrote instead of writing the same shhite over and over again. Its because of you that we need a FAQ section! So that the crap gets lost!

i made a typo, which i have now corrected:

also not all smallport 4age/map ae92 gze rods are the same as the silvertop ones.
they change from the early big ones to the silvertop type is later than the small port head change

so yes, i agree a good FAQ is needed to weed out the BS. and man is there HEAPS on the net about the 4age4agze, let alone other engines/cars :?

the rule of thumb to remember about 4age/4agze conrods is they are exactly the same.
eg a 4agze built in march 1989 has the same rods as a 4age built at the same time. and a 4agze from dec 1991 has the same rods as a dec 1991 4age.

the small port head change is at a different time than the rod change.
so small ports have both the large and 20v type small rods.

so:

crnkin wrote:smallport gze have silvertop rods, smallport NON gze have early gze rods.

that line is not correct
