It's the spacing of the lower mounting holes on the rear shocks taht are different. People have been known to 'reposition' the top hole before today.
Whether this is strictly warrantable is questionable.

does anyone have the measurments of either
the shocks are from center to center 74mm, hole size 12mm
does that sound like ae82 shocks

The 92 rear hole spacing is approx around 5~8mm closer together than 82's however i think there might be a height differential as the 82 shocks are shorter overall than 92's by 3 odd inches. I have put 101 coilovers in my 82 and need to have the rears shortened somewhat so you may need to wind them up a far bit to level out your 92
