So jumped in the car this morning, turned the key and BANG!
Car hadn't been driven in near 11 hours....

I have seen this once before on a smaller spotlight battery which had a dead cell. But in terms of size this one must have been a good bang 8O .

Vents may have been plugged, internal short or alternator may have overcharged it. A few things can make a battery do that.

Yeah plenty of baking soda solution poured over it.

Not caused by over charging as been off for 11 hours.
Id say going by the lack of fluid it was low and built up hydrogen and popped when the key was turned. Possibly internal spark.
Sure made one hell of a noise and gave a few hearts a jump 8O

Seen a few truck batteries do that at work. It's the smell that gets ya.

speaking of batteries, one time i saw a fella in a workshop put brake fluid in to top it up instead of water.. it makes the most putrid (possibly harmful) gas uv ever smelt lol!
