MA/RA/TA6* shock angles for F code IRS

Postby wde_bdy » Tue Nov 01, 2005 10:30 pm

Right, at the point of putting coilovers into the rear of my Starlet with the TA63 diff setup. What I need to know is what the approximate factory angle for the rear shocks is so we can copy this with the new turrets that are going in. Current plan is to cut the front towers from a spare KE70 and use them in the rear of the Starlet/Carina floorpan, just need to set the approximate angle we want for them.
If any one else has installed coilovers into their car, would really appreciate any pics you can share. Need to get this sorted before the car can go away to get the cage installed.

Not really important with IRS, the shocks move through an arc anyway.

ah, IRS. i didnt think of that.

but still, wouldnt as upright as possible be best?
the more upright they are the more effective they are, and i also i think the less change in thier effectivness as they go through the arc

Don't really want to move the mount on the trailing arm, so trying to go upright pushes the mount way out into the wheel arch.

how much travel are you going to use realistically?
just make sure both sides are the same.
AA60 shocks with live axle are about 30 deg slanted.

Car is for gravel and seal use, so will need a bit of travel. Intention is to raise the towers around 2 inches from standard to allow reasonable length shocks since the car will run fairly low in tarmac setup.

Straight up is the factory way.
They go up inside the wheelwell.

check out this writeup of a coilover conversion i found....
http://www.greenhydrant.com/~drees/auto ... ilover.php
Looks a good idea to reinforce the susp arm shock mounting point. and would pay to do the sway bar mount at the same time.

I would like to convert my F IRS to rear coilovers at some point, but adj rear camber is more of a priority i think.

Do you have massive neg camber, you done anything to correct it?
Also what subframe bushes do u have? Super pro urethanes are around $180 a pair!! im tempted to weld the old bushes and just have solid mount subframe. :?

Factory are not vertical, top mounts 96cm apart, bottom mount 108cm. Without knowing the length of the shock at ride height though then angle is just a guess. Unfortunately I don't have the factory shocks or spring to set my car up with so can't measure my setup.
Yes I will be reinforcing the bottom shock mount.
Camber is to be correct by making the mounts for the trailing arms adjustable with camber bolts, details can be found on http://forums.toymods.org.au/

On my toyota carina AA63 IRS (Same chassis as TA63 3tgte carina/celica etc)
My car is lowered about 80 - 100mm I think
So:
With the top shock bush 730mm above the ground (205/50/15 tyres, rims etc)
I get an angle of 10 degrees + or - 1 degree outwards from the vertical
The slope front rear is pretty much vertical but will move a bit as the suspension moves.

Hope this helps.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
