t50 question 22 vs 20 spline

Postby rollaholic » Mon Aug 06, 2007 8:21 am

im looking at a t50 on trademe, only problem being its a 21 spline input shaft. how interchangable are the parts on these boxes? i know i'll be able to use my AE86 bellhousing, can i swap the input shafts over with relative ease too?

cheers.

no, bearings are different sizes IIRC so the housings won't fit together properly. i think all t50s have a 21 spline input shaft anyway, its the output shaft thats either 20 or 22 spline isnt it?

but the biggest difference between 20 and 22 spline (other than the obvious!) is the bearings are slightly larger in a 22 spline.

and you can't use a genuine ae86 bellhousing with a 20 spline t50. ae86s came with 22 spline boxes so if you want to run a 20 spline on an ae86 you need a spacer made up otherwise your gearbox will need a rebuild after about 5000km :x

im pretty sure thats how it is, anyone correct me if i'm wrong

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

damn, i figured the price was too cheap to be true :P are the actual gearsets the same? my ae86 shafts and bearings are ok (i think) but synchros are worn, particularly on 2nd. wouldnt be as easy as i had imagined with the bellhousing swap, but could i swap the synchro rings and gears between boxes?

possibly, but compare everything down to every little detail to make sure its the same before swapping it.

...but nothing that the bearings run on / sit on will be swappable as both the ID and OD of the bearings differ. gearboxes are pretty sensitive things!! i've swapped gears around on mine, it fitted up sweet but kept jamming. turned out one of the teeth on a gear had a nick in it, couldn't see anything with the eye but every time it got too that tooth it jammed.

so if you do swap stuff over, make sure it all turns freely with the gearbox assembled before putting it in your car!

I have been told by a very knowledgeable person as far as T50's go that once you crack a T50 open there are about 12 different variations. Such things spacers, needle roller bearings etc etc

yes there are many differences.
syncros also differ, syncro hubs, bearings etc etc

You can fit a 20 spline outputshaft t50 box behind a 4age t50 bellhousing all you have to do is fit a spacer to locate the housing and make sure the bearings are located correctly against the main housing that way you dont need to change the driveshaft on kps & ke if using the original diff,20&22 spline synchros are the same from what i`ve seen and they share the same synchro sleeves as well.

Can anbody clarify this bellhousing issue with detail. We're about to do just this (20 spline T50 behind 4AGE) and have not heard of this issue before.
Where is the problem? Is the input shaft on a 20 spline longer than that on a 22 spline?

I'm using the spacer that comes with the 22 spline gearbox in my 20 spline output T50 without any issies at all, i just used the spacer that matches the A bellhousing and comes off the 22 spline box. , (which is between the gearbox and bellhousing anyway), it's the tapered spacer not the thin ring that is in the 20 spline t50 , Haven't had any issues with changing and it's been like that for round 2 years of constant giving it a hard life.

The bellhousings on T series boxs locates the bellhousing you`ll find that the 22 spline output gearbox and therefore bellhousing has a different bearing outside diameter than the smaller 20 spline input bearing therefore you need to make a spacer to centralise the 4a t bellhousing otherwise you`ll have alignment problems its only a few mm but enough to cause problems.

Me too! It's an alignment thing - not a length thing. That's great thanks.

it isn't so much to "centralise" it, but to stop the input shaft moving backwards and forwards between the bellhousing and gearbox, literally. i've got pics of the difference, as you can see the 20 spline bearing sits right "inside" the seat, due to the bearing being smaller than the 22 spline. this in turn makes the bearing sit further down, or "inside" the bellhousing.

No the bellhousing locates on the outsdie diameter of the input bearing and lower cluster bearing that`s how it is suppose to be if its not then you get the input shaft misaligned, sure you need a spacer to pin the input shaft back against or close to behind against the gearbox casing small bearing boxes use bellview washers whereas big bearing boxs use a shim type spacer.

does anyone know if 5th gear and related parts from a t50, will fit in a t40?

Yes with the correct parts you can turn a t40 into a t50.

i got a 20 spline t50 here which would only be good for parts, reason being i'm not sure if everything is there...
pretty sure 99% of it is there though!
