dodgy fuel gauge

Postby barryogen » Mon Apr 21, 2008 9:16 am

Hi guys, I picked up my new 2001 Altezza RS200Z on friday, and discovered on Sunday morning that it's fuel gauge is dodgy, reading about 1/4 when completely dry, and once I got some gas in it, ~3/4 when full to the brim.

So, any solutions on how to fix it?

for the moment I'll just fill it every ~400kms, and carry a 5L fuel tank with me.

Is it the gauge or the sender that's given up??

umm, no idea.

I just thought about this... It may be just easier to drop off and get someone to look at it than getting it diagnosed online.

i have the same problem when it is full it is past the f when it is empty it is on the half line, i think it has something to do with the sender in the top of the tank, but i'm afraid i cant answer your question.

basic rule with my car is if you drive it you have to put gas in it no matter where the needle is.

if you fix it can you post up what it was? i really want to fix mine also.

My work car does this to an extent, can fill it right til there is fuel at the top of the pipe and the needle will still sit a way below full.
My money is on a iffy sender, which will be a pain cause it'll be part of the fuel pump module.

HA HA HA , you have just been tucked by an old yard trick, that backfires with the stepper motor type gauges!!!!!
if fuel has been taken from the car (most yards only leave 1/4 tank or less as it stops really long test drives), without the ignition on, the gauge does not descend.
fill the bugger till it comes out the filler tube and reset the needle on the gauge to FULL, unless an auto sparky on here has a more correct way of fixing it.
