Fielder Z Manual - noisy gearbox

Postby petercad » Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:41 pm

Hi all,

Looking at a 2000 Fielder Z, and the gearbox is noisy on deceleration, and I mean noisy - pedestrians look at you when coming up to a roundabout
What causes this?
I know it's a common symptom of these cars, but what is the cause
Also, being mechanically-minded and able to do that stuff too, are replacing the lift bolts that snap off a relatively easy job to do??

Not too hard then?
Anyone know the part number of the bolts so I can order from Toyota?

Lol.

Re the gearbox, my sister has a RunX Z with the 6spd and 2ZZ, I thought that it made a lot of noise on deceleration for a box that has only done 40,000km. Bad bearings perhaps? Incorrect oil? Have you tried changing the oil to see if that made a difference to the noise?

If its' as loud as you say then its' probably a bit late for simple fixes, I would say the best fix would be to get the box split open and bearings replaced, as a second-hand gearbox could well have the same issue given that it seems quite common. But then, gearbox work is pretty expensive so maybe getting another box might be an option if you don't intend to keep the car long term?

Luckily I'm buying the car from a dealer, and he has stated he'd fix the noise before I take it, so no matter what the cause, it'll be someone elses problem to fix anyway
Was thinking it was bearings too, it's just had a clutch and they're going to check the release bearing to ensure it's not to fault, then if the noise persists, bearings...

Look at one that isn't broken?

edit: beaten. If they're fixing it anyway who cares what it is, already someone else's problem :D

i'd be wanting to know exactly what was causing it, and what was done to repair it if i were you

since car dealers are renowned tight arses, and i very much doubt his margin will extend to a complete overhaul if thats what would normally be done.

I'll be sure to get a copy of any invoices for work completed, detailing what has been done.
Dealer seems very good, when I told him of the noise, he immediately said they'd fix it properly

A few banana skins in there or some sawdust should do the trick.

OK, box is back and installed.
Quieter than before, but still noisier than any other car I've had
Has had bearings replaced, backlash checked and adjusted where necessary.
What causes the noise on deceleration?
Is it in the gearbox, or a harmonic that the engine and gearbox create?

Just out of interest , have you driven another one or three to see if this noise is normal ?

I haven't driven any others, but a Carib BZ I had (actually had 2 of them), had quiet gearboxes.
Surely Toyota wouldn't have let these leave the factory sounding like they do?

The clutch.

What clutch is in it? Try a standard driven plate in there if is something fancy.

I have found that with clutches that have no give and no springs in the driven plate that on decel they rattle the teeth in the box.
Sounds like an exhaust rattle and only happens on deceleration at cruise rpms, not when high in the rev range.

Clutch is brand new and standard type.
Noise isn't a rattle, more of a bearing one, but 3 bearings have been replaced that were slightly rumbly.
Might put in that nice Nulon additive and see how it goes

Gbox bearings for some reason are very common to fail on the c boxes in the ZZE series. No idea why but we used to do heaps of them. I just can't recall exactly which bearings. If the noise is still there then I think they missed one! Does it do it when in gear or neutreal? Clutch in or out?

I've driven either 4 or 5 of these cars, and none of them had a noisy gearbox. So it's a fault not a feature if this one is noisy.
