bonnet scoop st205 bt4

Postby TRDmod » Wed Jun 23, 2004 10:59 am

The good looking bonnet scoop for the gt4 205s,
I was wondering, mine has a lining, for sound deadening and so the heat wont burn the pain on the bonnet, if I cut the hole on the scoop itself but leaving all insulation layers for the rest of the bonnet,

1: would this have an advantage for cooling? The car is covered when parked, and only driven occasionally.

2: any adverse effects, will it wreck anything

comments please and ppl who have actually done it, what have you found?

Thanks

What I did is I removed the rectangular piece of plastic from underneath the large vent in the center of the bonnet and kept the other fibrous insulation rear of this so the heat can escape the engine bay through the vent which is what it was designed for! The paint on the bonnet will be fine it's just the metal grille on top of the vent which will get VERY hot but that is of little concern unless you have inquisitive children

i really want to take it off to alleviate heat doing track work, but afraid someting will ruse

I have done 40000kms with the insulation cut away from the vent. Only issue is that the black powder coat on the grill is starting to flake off.

As a result the engine bay cools much much faster, especially compared to a ST165!!!

coooool
thats one thing im going to do straight away

so in the rain and stuff nothing adverse happens to the engine bay and bits of it?

cos someone told me to do that but i was afraid it might rust away inside and stuf like dat, but if you havent had a problem, no rust and all? is that right?

Well when the engine is hot the rain won't even touch the metal.

In terms of corrosion, well I have had manifolds and heatshields all HPC (or similar) coated. Only thing that has rusted is my alternator belt actuator.

So when that rusted what happened?
So should I need to get that coated as well, or do u think it would be fine as is?
The alternator belt actuator, how long did it take to rust, did u replace it, or do you just leave it?

ALternator actuator screw and the plate in the centre of the pulley all rusted. They just had light surface rust becuase I cleaned them with Sodium Hydroxide and never reprotected them!

When you think about it consider hew much moisture comes through radiator during heavy rain. The engine gets wet anyway.

true dat

Postby TRDmod » Wed Jun 23, 2004 4:33 pm

True true

But not as blatant as a 1 foot by half a foot vent totally open

But there doesn’t seem to be any problems, I will do it I thought it would cool the engine bay better, but I was abit weary

Hi all

I took all the insulation off the underside of the bonnet on my GTFOUR RC (approx 2&1/2 yrs ago) and have had no problems with rust or rain.

Just the black paint on the mesh peeling - so no biggie. Really notice the heat escaping - as it should.

Make up a heat shield to go under the IC to reduce heat soak. In the next month (prob Aug) I'm removing IC thorougly cleaning, stripping paint & polishing 8), then heat lagging underside, making PCV catch can and finally running IC pump constant (as it apparently stops when car is not moving) all this should reduce intake temps & keep system clean. :)

I'm assuming also most of this stuff would work equally as good for an ST205.

Cheers, Mark

well as long as there isnt any bad side like rust and stuff, because when i take it to pukekohe, the engine bay gets mighty hot, and i would like to h3elp cool the bay whilst on the track, im sure it would help with engine temp as well, even by one degree, that would be a great help

I was thinking of cutting my bonnet open and sticking my pod filter half poking out with a heat shield on the top to protecht it from the rain. Would it work? Or is it a bad idea?
