Turboing silvertop 4age?

Postby trueno_20v » Sun Oct 02, 2005 6:55 pm

Been thinking bout turboing my ae101 trueno silvertop 4age so need a bit of help on what i would need and how much its gonna cost. I can get a 600x300x70-80mm front mount new off trademe for around $250-$300 so thats sweet.

So where can i get a turbo manifold from?, also what sort of turbo i should use? Can i use standard ecu and AFM? What injectors? Fuel pump, and IC piping? Also what sorta boost it would handle reliably with standard internals done 155km, help would be good, cheers

same principles apply to silvertop as the 16v's

same crank, has oil squirters, has goodish rods, pistons can pose problems over 1bar.

However, with a link, t25 or t3/4, turbo manifold from grotty customs, animal customs, nite parts, evil_si, the list goes on... 440cc injectors and standard internals on about 10 psi you should be running a good 150kw atw, which would be good fun, if you wanna go over that youll either need race gas (nzefi runs 177kw atw on 18psi, racegas) or upgrade the pistons

other than that keep searching, it a massive topic i know!

Why what happens if you turbo it with the factory ecu?

i have heard third hand that it works with the factory ecu but only with a very small turbo on very low boost, the restriction on the exahust would outweigh any benifits and its mainly for the noise,

yourequire a new ece cos all the fuel maps will need to be changed

Would a safc be enough to tune it with it on say 8-10psi?

You could richen your afm output but it would run like a dog.

Your best bet is a 4AGZE. Then all you need is the manifold, turbo+downpipe and bov (cheap factory one) plus you can sell your old 20V to cover some cost.

problem with factory NA ecu's on boosted applications is timing.
you need to retard ignition timing with boost in order to prevent detonation. If you want a half reliable set-up you need some form of timing adjustment (or possibly a 4agze ecu but we wont go into that).
some people have got over the problem by running stupidly retarded base timing (like 0 degrees BTDC instead of 8 or 10 degrees BTDC), but this is far from ideal and will severely effect off-boost performance.
also one of those intercoolers is stupidly large for the power you will be seeing without some more major mods. Even one of the smaller 450x300x75 would be overkill.
Still, those 600x300 ones fill the bumper nicely and look good, which is all that most care about...

t3 is ok, but probly a little big and a bit of a hassle if your just on stock ecu, and if your after market its probly too small, go for a t28/5, m10, or a tdo4, for stock turbo, no intercooler or maybe a gze/rx7/vr4, and aftermarket- a t25 or t3/4 hybrid, with again a small intercooler.

If you do run a t3, water lines from enzed will do the trick

t3 off the skyline is not too big. t28 is bigger (cable of more power)
water lines are not essential. possibly tap into your water feed and return for heater if u want water lines.

td04 are a good option. Cheap and good boost response with a smallish intercooler. VR-4 sized intercooler are perfect size and can be had at $100.

If you want a 20V turbo prepare to dish out the dollars. I've explorered the route of turboing a N/A but its just too much hassel and too unreliable.

unless your prepared to pay through the roof for custom fabrication and tuning there isnt too much advantage to keeping it as a 20v turbo and if you were gonna spend that amount of money you may as well take it to speedtech to get them to do it, i looked into it once with my 20v and decided it wasnt worth the effort

hey man if u want a turbo mani for a /4age you can buy mine off me, its off a map sensored GZE, u'll just need to get a new head flange lazer cut to fit ur 20v hole pattern. was for a td05, and has an external wastegate adaptor pipe. if u interested PM me.
