Finally need to splash out and buy some tools for myself, live to far away from my brothers and my friends are probably getting frustrated with me borrowing them constantly.

Anyways, What brand is decent? Eg. not mega pricey but will do a decent job without dieing after torqueing something up. I've had experiances with sidcrhome and teng tools and they seem to do the job well, but what should i be expecting to pay? Looking at a socket set (possibly 24 piece, imperial and metric) From about 6mm to uhh say 24mm and imperial with what ever their numbers are... Also would want a set of spanners with a box end ranging through the same sizes.

Wouldn't mind a power bar (~700mm) either (price permitting).

So whose had experiances with what (good and bad) and how much $$ should i be expecting to pay annnnnd does anyone know any deals going on in hamilton atm

could always go and buy the best available at repco as the tools have a lifetime warranty.

I've taken back old ratchets that have totally shit themselves and got replacements without receipts

I personally wouldnt go with Powerbuilt ratchets, just cause all the mechanics seem to smash them all the time, or the circlip holding the selector lever always seems to fall out. I guess they'd be fine for home use.
The Repco ratchets seem to be pretty bloody good too, though again mechanics can wreck them pretty easily

My brothers a mechanic and i've seen him work.

I'm not surprised nothing but the best stands up to the punishment.

On a side note, i talked to him, told me to get some prices and he'll see if he can source somethign better.

What only bluemaumau has touched on, but has not been discussed is the drive size also- quite important to consider imo
Personally I'd go larger than 24mm on the big set, and buy a smaller set down to the 6mm. No point having a 1/2" drive with a 6mm- makes it overly easy to bust the bolt/but.
I have a selection of sets from 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 1" drives-4mm-65mm & similar size of imperials, different set for different job.
but...if you are going for a single decent set, get a 1/2" drive, they take more abuse than the 3/8" sets.

Depending what you're doing of course. I'd prefer a 3/8 set over the 1/2 as thats what I use more often. The powerbuilt set from 6mm up to 22mm that includes a set of imperial sockets, extensions and spark plug sockets is good value. Got mine ages ago for about $95 and being powerbuilt comes with the replacement guarantee should anything break (ratchet has, replaced no questions).

If you're getting a 1/2 set then you'll probably want to go up to a 32mm as that will cover Toyota CV nuts (not all).

plus where are there any bolts less than 10mm, im yet to find any and my cars in pieces

some headunit mounting bolts 8mm...but yeah, not too common on most car parts. I had to use my 4mm the other day...granted it was inside an electronic box lol.

hrmm, starter motors & alternators usually have nuts/bolts smaller than 10mm. (not the mounting bolts - the actual nuts/bolts holding them together)
and other electrical stuff sometimes does as well.
but unless you are routinely pulling stuff like that apart, you dont come across anything smaller than 10mm, maybe 8mm, very often.
