I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I've got a growing collection of 4age connecting rods... blacktop, silvertop, smallport, bigport.
I've nearly got one of each type so we can have a good collection of pics.
Hopefully this will help people identify what rods they have and what ones the might want to run in their engine.

ok, full history including part numbers and dates of 4age/ze con rods

dates read as year, then month. ie 8305 means 5th month 1983

8305 to 8307
13201-19035 no longer a a recognised number (crank p/n same)
used in ae86

superseded to:

8307-8707
13201-19065 s/s to 13201-19066
used in ae86, ae82 aw11 etc. (aw11 8406-8709)

CRANK CHANGES TO 42MM BIGEND TYPE 8705 (n/a aw11 8709 s/c aw11 from 8608)

8705-9102
13201-19095 s/s to 13201-19096
used in: ae92 and aw11 (aw11 8709-8912)

NOTE: small port head change is 8905. so small ports used both rods

9102-9505
13201-19125 s/s to 13201-19126
used in ae92 until 9106. ae101 from 9106-9505

9505-0008
13201-19155
ae101 (wagons carried on untill 0008)
ae111

WEIGHTS OF IMPORTANT THINGS!

Postby KinLoud » Sun Jul 01, 2007 9:37 pm

Adrian (acesniper) and I took a box of goodies to my work and got permission to use a set of accurate scales.

Just went to work with all of my rods and pistons and weighed them.
I've kept them in groups of parts from the same engine - this is so I can sus out how toyota makes balancing their engines simpler. I figure that they just stamp out 1000's of rods each day and just sort out groups of very similar weights... Looking at the results it seems that some groups are pretty close... and others not.

RODS (all without bearing shells)
Late Smallport and Silvertop with nuts and bolts
Group 1 -
512.86g
513.55g
512.59g
Group 2 -
509.33g
507.80g
507.65g
509.30g
Group 3 -
513.83g
512.39g
510.09g
511.22g
Rod from Adrian
510.37g

Late Bigport and Early Smallport with nuts and bolts
Group 1 -
534.76g
533.31g
Rod from Adrian
498.65g Not sure why this weighed so much less than the others? Maybe we misidentified it?

Aftermarket (brand name to be confirmed), no bolts
357.03g

PISTONS (all without rings)
Silvertop pistons - note, pistons still dirty when weighed (carbon and oil residue), could make 2 or 3 gram difference I guess?
Group 2 -
286.55g
288.45g
288.79g
287.25g
Group 3 -
285.70g
288.20g
287.74g
286.45g
Piston from Adrian
289.39g

Silvertop pins
weighed 9 pins, all weights very similar -
between 97.19g and 97.63g

Blacktop piston
293.57g
Backtop pin
84.74

TODA piston (81mm)
286.49
TODA pin
83.97
TODA Circlips
0.5g each (1g per piston)

ROD BOLTS
ARP 4age 9mm rod bolt kit - nut and bolt
31.25g each (62.5g per rod)

More to come...

All you conrod geeks - read this article that discusses powder forged rods vs drop forged rods
http://www.metal-powder.net/business/ar ... jun05.html
Powder forged rods are better in many aspects.
An interesting part of this document relates to failure of powder forged rods:

"Powder-forged rods typically failed at or near the minimum cross-section of the I-beam, where both surface and sub-surface crack-initiation sites were observed. Drop-forged connecting rods were found to fail in a less consistent fashion, which scanning electron microscopy revealed to be related to defects such as oxides, folds and microcracks. This could explain the much larger scatter of fatigue strength values exhibited by the drop-forged rods."

Sounds like the Blacktop rods could be produced using the powder forged method as this could explain why they all tend to fail in the same place??
PM me any comments

Also - does anyone have pics of failed 4age rods?
