St215 Making a rattling noise

Postby thedrunkfish » Fri Feb 29, 2008 8:32 pm

I have just brought a 98 manual gtt caldina and have noticed a distinctive rattling / tapping noise, sounds like something is loose coming from the front of the car, much more noticeable when decelerating. Taken in for a service today and the mechanic thought it might be coming from the gear box he said where the drive shaft meets it has a tiny bit of play could be rattling in there when it's not under load but i can still make out the noise nder light acceleration. Funny thing is it's goes away when i turn to the right when decelerating.
My questions are, has anybody had his problem before? Is it a common problem in st215? and also what other reasons could cause this apart from gearbox? He said one of the CV joints is getting towards replacing but that wouldn't cause this kind of rattle.

Cheers

had a similar thing on my trueno that turned out to be the backing plate to the brake disc just rubbing on the back of the disc.

could be anything really.

does it vary with rpm or road speed? under braking or coasting or both? it improves when you turn one way so what isnt touching when you turn that way?
that will give you an indication of where to look. just a matter of using common sense.

the heatshields over the exhaust manifold can tend to rattle on them if the bolts arent tight too.

just seems to happen when im coasting, it's a definate thumping noise and can be felt by the passengers feet but it sounds like something is kinda loose, it cant be felt once you take off. The gearbox itself feels fine. Most of the time i cant feel it when im braking. and if im coasting and i push the clutch in it goes away, which would steer me away from something rubbing or hitting something.
Thanks for the reply

left mate, father-in-law came round today hes a mechanic, took him for a drive to see what he thinks, he reckoned it wasnt the gearbox because it was more of an external noise. He said it sounded a lil bit like a cv noise but when we looked at them they seemed fine. Engine mounts seem fine and the exhaust has enough clearance. Im gonna have a look at the brake caliper tonight to see if it's that.

Yea spent three days $&#$% around on mine already, have replaced the outer CV out of desperation, Some have suggested the wheel bearing as they can make funny noises on the caldina while still appearing to be sweet! Have had a CV specialist come for a drive and he want's me to pull the inner CV apart and bring it in for him to look at, Haven't had time yet, was thinking of maybe swapping the two inner cv's over at the same time see if it fixes it/ moves the sound.
Funny thing is when reading your post I thought the driveshaft emerging from my gearbox was a little wobbly too, My mechanic rekons its normal though.
Have you checked your steering rack? I know "gleem" had a missing bolt which led to a rattle while coasting from the left of his car. maybe similar prob?

ill check all the bolts etc on monday when i get it on the hoist. My mechanic told me the same thing about my drive shaft having a tiny bit of play, he is ringing a gearbox specialist on monday to see if they can shed some light on it. Im gonna give my cv boots a really good greasin on monday too at both ends to se if that helps. Other than that im gonna get a few opinions from different mechanics. We'll get there in the end! I bet it's something really simple too, well i hope haha.

I have the same noise in my gt-t! As does WCKWGN.
Only when decelerating like you said and definately front left. Goes away when clutch in and gets faster with engine speed. Is still present when breaking. I also get a groaning noise from the same area when the steering wheel is turned to the right, but not the left.

I have had problem with exhaust not clearing driveshaft before and is definately not that.
Is bugging the hell out of me though.

I was going to go see mechanic during the week, it seems to be getting louder..

Strange noise, cant really pick what it is on the road. As above, when the clutch goes in the noise goes away.

Didn't realise it was so common

Wheel bearings are the most common cause of such noises on the GTT, especially the LH ones. The bearing may check out ok, but the noise disappears when they are replaced :?

if you're inner CV joint was worn one would think you should have some kinda vibration rather than just a noise

From what I have read on these forums, it seems to be the LEFT REAR wheel bearing that is the culprit.

talked to the mechanic today regarding the wheel bearing. Basically said due to the type of wheel bearing that he didnt know how it could make such a noise under load etc. Can someone else expain?
Also the prices on the bearings seem horrendous, 150 was the best price quoted, can anyone get them cheaper?
Any help would be MUCH appreciated, cheers.
