Time for new tyres - ST205

Postby RunningRich » Sat Sep 06, 2008 7:55 pm

Failed my warrant as one tyre has been cut out on the inner edge by poor alignment. The Yokohama A539's have been fantastic, they lasted 40000kms which is 15000 better than any other set I've ever had on a GT-Four.

Trouble is there are no A539's left, in fact Yokohama have nothing at all in my size (235-40R17).

I'm looking at Goodyear GSD3 and Dunlop DZ101. Bit wary of Toyo as I wasn't too impressed by two sets of T1-S I had before. Bridgestone is too $$$. Don't want Falken/Nankang junk.

What experience do people have of currently available brands on the ST205?

GD3 are good.
Falken and Toyo are fine too. It comes down to how you drive, etc.

I found Nexen's useless on my Skyline, but Yokohama's were good.
However on my Forester, Nexens are good. As I drive them differently.

Do you just want everyone on ts to list what they use beacuse it seems thats all that happens, That dont actually make it a better tyre does it? it just so happens to be what they got when they got tyres last.

your best bet is to go and see tyre guy you trust, tell him how much you want to spend, and how you like to drive the car. let him choose the tyre!

i have Gsd3's on my 205 rich - for most conditions they are good - but i can still break them from traction easier than their predecessoe the gsd2 ..

ive had dunlop sportmaxx on my old GT4 - which were good for dry poor for wet ( for a gt4 ), and toyo proxies on my old standard rims ( were worn , didnt get a good chance to check )

Frank is running potenzas i think on his Gt4 - and so far hes had no complaints ..

Michelens seem awesome for NZ roads as well - as found on my housemates legacy GT

If you're just replacing the one tyre you're going to want something with a similar tread pattern to the A359s. No point putting a GSD3 on if its completely different tread even though they are a really good tyre.
A decent tyre guy like rollaholic said should be able to recommend something appropriate. Be wary though & if you dont trust his recommendation dont go with it. I sorted out some tires for my flatmate the other week & one place I rang tried to tell me roadstones were better than GSD3s  I rang back & spoke to the manager who I know & he said the opposite (surprise, surprise) Needless to say he went with the GSD3s & now cant stop raving about them.

Not at all, which is why I put ST205 in the title and asked for experience of currently available brands on the ST205.

I'm fully aware that any comment must be taken with a grain of salt and people's expectation of tyres differs. My experiences of tyres on my ST205 (T1S and A539) indicates the A539 to be a far better tyre, and so it should given that it is newer than the T1S and costlier.

The other tyres I've bought recently are Dunlop FM901 which have proved great on my Alfa, but I appreciate that this is a totally different car (and FM901 are no longer available either!).

There are plenty of people here to have experienced the good and the bad of the currently available tyres. Should these things not be discussed?

I would never, ever replace just one tyre!

When I bought wifey's Honda it came with four different tyres on it, including one retread and one snow tyre. It got four nice new Yokohama's straight away.

different car i know but i've got (and always run) toyo proxes4's on my mr2 turbo. excellent traction in the dry and nice and predictable in the wet. they're also pretty quiet as far as road noise goes.

my partner runs them on her starlet gt race car and also has nothing but good things to say about them....her last set lasted 5 years (3 of which the car was daily driven) and a whole bunch of track days and have only just been replaced

Got to agree here, lots of people go with Proxes with good results, never heard a bad thing about them. They re also on par price wise with Falken FK452.

Richard I have brand spanking GSD3's on my 96 ST205 and they are fantastic. They are almost uniformally recommended by the st205 users on the gt40c.

I have GSD3 on my GT4, they are fabulous, especially on wet, in fact they are so good that braking traction in wet requires a lot of momentum (which spoils somewhat fun)...
