Re: what does a degraded wheel bearing sound like?
Oh well, I figure if the hub fits properly and has been pressed in without damage, then the bearing will be held together by the friction of the pressed in hub... so if there is play after install, the hub may need replacing.

Re: what does a degraded wheel bearing sound like?
But the cv nut holds the inner races together and holds the flange in place, you will always have play as there is nothing to keep it intact. If you were to leave the cv nut off and drive down the road the wheel would fall off.

Re: what does a degraded wheel bearing sound like?
Why would you take the hub nut off and wiggle it? That's the only thing actually holding the 2 inner races together and stopping play in most cases. Almost any FWD that you take a hub nut off will have play.
Not in my experience, note i'm only wiggling it by hand, not with any weight on it or with ...

Re: DS2500 vs DS3000 vs something else brake pads?
Good pads and braking setups will always chew disc's. Generally it is accepted that for every set of good pads you'll go through 1-2 sets of rotors.
Agree. What's people's problems with replacing disks? Disks are just a consumable just like the pads.

Re: what does a degraded wheel bearing sound like?
I usually check front drive bearings by taking the hub nut off and wiggling the wheel around. Sometimes the bearings can be worn but not easy to feel with the hub nut done up tight.
If the bearing has gone after 10,000km the hub nut may not have been tight enough.

Re: Battery Problems
Had this problem in my AE82, but it never turned over properly, just clicked.
The problem is that there is no relay to the starter solenoid, so all the little wires going via the key barrel with old plugs introduce enough voltage drop that the solenoid never fires properly.

Re: "Grip tyre softener" stockists
Stink. I'm looking for a way to use some old semis on the drag strip. Unfortunately they are much harder than they use to be, and a stickier tyre would be good for the 60'.
Anyone else used anything to soften tyres?

If you want it cheap then doing it yourself is the best option. A light that sticks on the inside of the window can be bought from Repco/Supercheap.

Re: upcoming trackday. brakes or swaybars
Buy a brake pad compound that works when hot, like a proper race compound. I wouldn't think that the actual brakes need replacing though.
And flush/change all of the brake fluid - very important!

Re: Brake dust removal tips
Have you tried a mag wheel cleaner spray? I use them all the time, it seems to dissolve the brake dust OK.
Last one I got was Repco Eclipse Wheel Cleaner contains " <10% Oxalic Acid"
Just spray and walk away... then hose it off within 2 minutes, and maybe scrub while hosing
