Moving to Auckland, where to live

Postby blindnz » Fri Dec 24, 2010 11:08 pm

So it looks like im moving to Auckland for work. Working in the city CBD.
Whats the deal where is good to live?

I wouldnt mind somewhere i can park my car etc, so not to sold on apartments or town houses.
North Shore way seems nice, like beach etc, but i hear its a pain to commute/train bus whatever to work.

Any recommendations?

Might help to give people an idea of what you're willing to spend - that'll narrow your options down a lot in Auckland. If you plan on using public transport, Move to somewhere on the city fringe (Epsom, Blockhouse Bay, Grey Lynn, Pt Chevalier, Newmarket/Parnell, Meadowbank, Orakei etc)

I commuted into the city from South Auckland daily and it cost me a fortune. Public transport was marginally cheaper (on account of not paying for parking) but there were regular delays, it took forever and it was just generally unreliable. In the end I just found it easier to drive in - took less time too.

I wouldn't even consider the North Shore if I was commuting to the CBD ~9-5. There are far easier places and for the cost it doesn't really make living there worth it IMO. You can drive to the beach anytime you want it's not that hard and there are good beaches out West too.

the shore isnt terrible to commute (relatively speaking) if you live near the bridge, otherwise yes, its stupidly awful.

meadowbank is a good area to live while working in the cbd.

I dont mind what I am spending, but was more interested in what is the best option around Auckland.

If i lived in say Takapuna, how long would it take to get to work at 8am?
Or what is it like to be around east, such as mission bay etc?

The thing is I've only been to Auckland once or twice and pretty much taxied around. So I have no idea.
I hear the harbor bridge is a pain to commute but have no idea of anywhere else, where and where not to live

I've lived in Mission Bay/Kohimarama and it's quite nice. Walking distance to the beach and generally nice people. Expensive though but I used to cycle in to the CBD for work so that made things a bit cheaper.

Is out west all good? like henderson, or is that a pain in the arse like the north shore.

I literally have no idea :P

I'm so accustomed to christchurch, where i can live in a niceish suburb about 15 minutes from town with a yard and garage etc...

West Auckland is pretty much the same as Outrageous Fortune

North Shore is nice dude, fairly tame, not much noise but good eating and weekends makes a straight forward commute to the city but yeah in the morning things can get a little hectic, not too bad though - maybe 30-40 minutes tops?

East Auckland has decent housing for the value, just it is so far away from everything basically - so North Shore would be the first option if possible.

I live in east Auckland, it's about 19 km to city center, if I worked In the city I would live in kohimarama mission bay, meadow bank etc, I would not bother with the harbour bridge each day, some days may be ok, others absolute sh t,

Rent prices can vary dramatically dependent on the area, closer to the city the more it costs,

Would definitely recommend finding some one to stay with short term until you find your bearings and suss out were you want to live, no point committing then realising oh fcuk,

I like living out east, when I have to work in the city as long as I get on the motorway before 7 I can be in town by 7.20,
I like the north shore, but wouldn't live there unless I didn't have to cross the bridge daily,
Not a big fan of west Auckland,

What Si says. I live on the shore (albany) but then i also work about 7km away, and takes me ~10 minutes to work.

If i worked in town i wouldnt even consider living here, i hate traffic!

I lived in West Auck until I was 21, mostly around Henderson/Massey. You do get a decent number of idiots out that way, but it does depend a lot on which suburb you live in. Closer to the motorway, the ranges or the beaches tend to be a bit nicer, where the areas in between (Ranui, Swanson, Glen Eden, etc) are the typically the cheapest and therefore usually the biggest shitholes.

I now live in South Auckland, the commute in to the city from South/East isn't that bad, but I wouldn't want to do it too frequently in a car. I take my motorbike or bicycle most days which means a lot less time sitting in traffic (and often my bicycle is faster than driving would be too). Takes me about half an hour on my motorbike and 45-50 mins on the bicycle from Papatoetoe, which is about 20km from work.

There are a lot of central suburbs that would potentially be worth considering, depending on how much space you want. I'm thinking places like Mt Eden, Kingsland, Sandringham, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby. There's a shittonne of rentals and flats available in these areas because they're pretty much ideal places to live for people working or going to uni in the CBD. They're not awfully close to any (decent) beaches, but considering you'll probably go to the beach once or twice a week (if that), and probably wont have to battle traffic on the way there, I wouldn't worry about that too much because really, everywhere is relatively close to a beach in Auckland.

I wouldn't even consider public transport unless you get a place close to a train station. The trains are shit and pretty unreliable in timing, but they at least don't have to sit in traffic like a bus does. The prices for public transport are too high to give you much benefit over driving (especially if you have a flatmate/gf/carpool buddy to half the cost per person for driving).

I used to live in rural Albany and it was half an hour to get to town each day ( 5 mins to get to albany bus station and park, then 25 mins on the bus). If your catching a bus like the northern express they are scheduled every 2 or 3 minutes at peak times

When I first moved to Aucks I lived in Ponsnoby, then moved to Milford, then back to Herne Bay, then to Glen Innes, then out to Murray's bay on the shore, then Scummynook, then Beach Harlem. Out of all of them the best of course was Ponsnoby but hell expensive, then came Herne Bay followed by Glen Innes.

Use to take me 2+ hours (depending if there were any drops of water from the sky) in the mornings to get from Murray's Bay to CBD, where as Ponsnoby was 15-20 mins and Glen Innes was 30-45 mins.

te atatu peninsula is worth a look if you want somewhere a bit more affordable, easy motorway access and the north western is not too bad if you get in reasonably early.

te atatu south tends to have ridiculious queues.

two wheels ftw, i'd never go back to a cage in auckland for commuting. as much for my sanity as the time it saves!

I have lived in Auckland all me life, first on the Shore, then Ellerslie, now just moved to Remuera.

When I was on the shore I lived in Northcote Point, basically the last stop on the line for busses to the city - took me about 25-30ish mins to get to uni each day, busses were never on time though. Wouldn't consider living deeper in the shore than Northcote/Birkenhead/Takapuna - can't be bothered wasting my life commuting.

Greenlane/Ellerslie/Remuera area is awesome. Easy train to the city and close to the motorway to do all the other stuff you want to do. Places with garages/lawn aren't too common, but they do exist.
