UPDATE:

Have Workshop manual - will be working on preping the engine this week.

Engine swap occouring this weekend, both saturday and sunday.

I didn't wanna say anything cause my cars the one with no engine.......

That would be nice though brendon... im bound to have forgotten something small when I go to put it together again.

Im currently shopping around for a new headgasket, is a bigger thickness better than thiner? You know what they say, do it once, do it right.

Any other suggestions for replacing things?

SO far i've got;

Head Gasket,
Water Pump,
CamBelt (already got new one)

Replace the headgasket with an original spec one. raising or lowering the compression is probably not a good idea.
replace the cambelt idler wheel thingie.
Maybe replace headbolts

Leon - he has brought a drop in engine, giving it a bit of a freshen up before it goes in as its done a few Km's (think i read that) & its better to be safe than sorry

Good question Leon.

Someone mentioned replacing the gaskets. The engine im putting in has done 85,000kms.

I figured I'd go down to Repco or Supercheap at some point and grab a gasket.

So I should ask for a manifold gasket and a head gasket.
If i ask for a "cambelt idler wheel thingie" you think they might know what I want? LOL

Revhead, you still got that contact of yours that can get a good deal for some mitsi stuff?

Sweet.... then i'll not touch it.

Now, the top is currently off the engine, exposing the cams, this was done so he could keep it all oiled without having to run it. Do I need a new rubber seal thingie? there is one on it at the moment.

I deffinitly need a new oil filter though. The one on the old motor needs replacing and the new block has an old crappy one on it atm.

Opps.. I didn't read the whole post and thought you were fixing the old one. Yeah, leave the replacement together. It probably hasn't had a cambelt change, so change that and the idler/tensioner. Oils seals would be worth replacing too.

The old motor had new belts about 20,000ks ago,.... so those will still be good.

Yes definatley leave it with standard bits in, I thought you had a new block only, not a whole 2nd hand engine, shouldn't be too bad then, I don't think I'm up to anything this weekend, so I may offer you my limited experience to give you a hand.

Oh and blair,

Ours doesn't smoke or steam!!

It used to but has been fixed, normal Subaru EJ20 problems apparently
