barryogen wrote:wow, thats pretty hefty... I mean the first one you're almost always gonna need a cert(how many seats share exact anchorages with Toyotas?), although it would depend on what they consider to be part of the anchorages and what isn't, and the last one means that pretty much anything since 1997(probably earlier) needs a cert too.

Whats a cert cost these days?

hehe :D left the part out on the bottom which detailed that the only anchorages that CANNOT be changed, are the fixings for the rails themselves.
You could set up any rail system, so long as it is anchored on the original mounts for the old rails.

My car doesnt have an airbag... :? Its a '96.

you may find however that because you are altering the seat that is attached to the rains unless the seat is exactly the same dimensions externally as your old ones it will affect the way the belt anchorage works, as in the thing will be either pushed outward or pulled inward because the seat is thicker/thinner than your original meaning that if they wanted to be picky the could say no go for it, also unless the belt anchorage is on the actual rail itself (can't remember for bzgs) than you are altering the seat belt entirely and so will need to get a cert

Another hijack, is it alright to have to non reclining buckets in a 2 door car if you dont have rear seats and seatbelts anymore? does this need to be certed? has anyone here actually done it before? thanks!

The car needs to be recertified as a 2 seater car.

What has that got to do with fixed back seats in a 2 door car?

IIRC its illegal to have fixed back seats in a 2 door car even if the back seats are gone without having the car cert'd as a 2 seater.

i was referring to needing to be certified as a 2 seater, which is what you said. which also has no bearing on fixed back buckets

afaik as long as there are no modifications to rails, or the seats themselve and passengers are not obstructed getting out, fixed back buckets are legal and dont need certing.

so if the fixed back buckets and your original seat rails havent been modified, and there are no back seats to be hindered by them, its fully legal.

this is my take on things anyway. the onl real way to find out is to call vtnz and ask them :)

Interesting, thanks for bringing that up

So you are saying that if the belt anchorage is AFFECTED, it needs a cert.

What would you describe as "AFFECTED"?
If it still holds the belt in place accordingly and works as it should, a small adjustment to its position shouldnt matter?

I think the belt IS anchored on the rail itself, it looked that way when I last looked but I'll have to check this weekend when I put them in

However just checked then and the base of the bucket seat (where the belt is anchored) is the same width (450mm) as the standard seats

thanks

any adjustment to your seatbelts, including the anchorages will almost definitely require certing

Re registered you mean, don't need a cert so long as you permanently cover up the rear seat and rear belt mounting points so that they can't be used again with the factory bits, doesn't mean you couldn't rig something up but if you just remove the seats and belts they won't let you do it. Actually i think even if you tried to get a cert with them just taken out and not remove the fixing for factory stuff you wouldn't get a cert either.

Um should have been more clear on that - anything that is altered from the factory mounting position whether it be just a slight adjustment or a whole new setup will need to be certed. I should have been more clear when talking about the seat widths as normally the belt stalk has a hard part that you can't bend at the base which if the seat was much wider or narrower wouldn't work as it was designed to which may not require certing but imho i'd rather know for a fact that it was going to work as the factory designed it to in the event of a serious or even minor accident.
