Hey, just with my misfiring issue i was woundering if i should try a coil pack.. if they do them for a 4age 16v?

Also, where can i get these for and are they generic?

And how do they work?? Cause my loom to my dizzy needs re-doing (or so we think) and do coil packs use the stock loom or one at all?

If you mean DLI, no you can't run that on stock wireing/ECU...

Sorry to go a bit off-topic, but while talking about coilpacks...

Whats the difference between say 4AGZE coilpacks and gen 4 3SGE coilpacks? Im in the middle of wiring my Microtech onto my gen 2 3SGTE, which runs quad coilpacks...Is it as easy as getting them of any car? Or will i have to track down specific ones? What happens with the dizzy?

I can comment on the gen 4 3sge ones at least.

Basically, there are four wires going into each coil.

One is power input
One is earth
One is signal from ECU
one is return signal to ECU.

The charge gets stored via the two main power/earth wires, and fired when given the signal from the ECU.

When this happens, the coil sends a return signal to the ECU to say that this has occured successfully.

I can only speculate as to what this signal is, I would guess that 5 volts triggers it?

I think they are different from the GZE ones, gen 4 ones are all on top of the plug, but IIRC the GZE coils are off to the side, and have leads running to the spark plugs?

BTW the distributor becomes redundant, the ignition timing is all controlled by the ECU, based on crank angle, RPM, etc. etc.

Gen 4 3S's have a hall effect sensor to figure out what the crank position is, like this:

There is a magnetic sensor underneath which counts the teeth on the wheel.

Which it uses to ascertain the optimal ignition timing etc,

I dont think that a gen 2 3sgte works in a similar manner?
I cant remember seeing anything similar on my old 3sge.

4AGZE coils are not individual, there are two coil packs which fire together (4,1 and 2,3) One spark is the power stroke, one is fired with the exhaust exit (wasted).

The coils only have a power wire and ignitor wire. The ecu controls the ignitor which in turn cuts the coils and sparks the plug.

Feel free to correct me if im wrong.

It sounds like the 3sge are a different type all together.

Indeed they are.

The 3S coils are four distinctly self contained and seperate units, with their own ignitors, which each live over top of their respective spark plugs.
And arent a 'wasted spark' system.
IIRC running them as wasted spark will actually make them overheat.
Might be able to snap a pic or two later if I'm not feeling lazy.
