CV JOINTS and Safety

Postby Volatile » Fri Sep 01, 2006 7:32 am

Just got quick question,

Both my CV joints in my corolla are clicking quite badly. I just got a new WOF from VTNZ but the wof checker said you could not fail a WOF on CV.

My question
Is it safe to be driving around with clicking CV's ?

Thanks
James

Not really as one of them may just lock up if they're getting really bad or just go open and transmit no drive. I think if they're getting really bad then they can be failed as a safety item. It is a driveline fault afer all

as far as I'm aware from the knowledge of the WOF checkers that I work with during work experience, the only reason that CV joints/split CV boots can be failed under WOF is if the CV grease is getting on to the brake discs, therefore impairing braking ability. But if they've been kind enough to let you know that you need to get them replaced then, do it.

Ok. just recently in my parents car. The cv that had been clicking for about a year. Shattered which in turn put the axle out and snapped the axle.... You cant drive the car all you get is a scraping/griding noise and the axle still turns.

My advice would be 2 get htem replaced now. Whats $60 ? compared to a new/2nd hand axle + labour etc etc

I've never seen a noisy CV seize, though it is possible. They usually just snap and you lose all drive.

Might as well replace them, it'll only take you a couple of hours to do it yourself.

I blow one or two Porche 930 CV's a year. In my case the cages just disintegrate and the axle flails around in the remaining cage. This obviously damages the spline on the axle and can be terminal for the axle.

If its possible for the axle to pop out of the Toyota cages then there is serious cause for concern. The axle would more than likely damage the CV on the other end and possibly if caught damage the stub shaft on the gearbox.
