Getting your car across...

Postby com » Wed Jan 17, 2007 3:02 pm

Heya! Just a quick question...

I'm planning on moving to Australia at the end of the year and was wondering how involved and expensive would it be to get my '92 AE101 across to OZ?

Quite, I'm not sure if the personal vehicle allowance still exists. Might pay to contact the head of the state you're planning on moving to, as different states have different rules for vehicles.
Though actually being an old car (15+ year old), it might not pose too much of a difficulty anymore.

to take it across privately you're looking at around 2 - 3g from memory....not cheap!

When I was over there you had to have owned the car for a year and you could deem it a private import. But someone said that the law might have changed and it's now 2 years???

no its resonably easy.. i looked into it about 18months ago.
my ae101 was quoted as being worth 8-12k 8O
prices i worked out were getting close to 5k to get it there and on the road.

Well I've had it for close to (if not) 5 years now, so that's not an issue.

I want it across as it has a sentimental value and i enjoy driving it. I'm glad to hear that they have something in place for personal imports so I gather it should not be an issue just a lil expensive :)

But I'm willing to spend a few k as the prices over there are not pretty.

Thanks for your input!

also the choice over there for cars is rather limited.....

unless you want a falcon or commodore, then they are cheap and plentiful

Yeah you certainly pay top dollar over there. When I was last over I noticed there were quite a few immaculate TA22's, KE corollas in stuff... 8)
