Dealer Plates????

Postby Infinite » Sat Jul 28, 2007 9:30 pm

Anyone know the laws on dealer plates, ive allways assumed u can drive a car on them aslong as it is a, going to get work done on the vehicle or, b, coming back from having work done, or going to get wof/reg? anyways ive just been given a 400 doller ticket 4 no wof/reg on the vehicle and been told that a dealers plate is "ONLY for prospective buyers to test drive a vehicle" what the $&#$%....

http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/vehicle-ownership/trade-plates.html#uncert

"If you're legally entitled to use a trade plate, you can put a trade plate on a vehicle and drive it - even if the vehicle hasn't been registered with both plates and a current licence, and in some limited situations, if it has no warrant of fitness."

"Trade plates for uncertified or unregistered vehicles
This information applies only to people who need trade plates to drive a vehicle that is uncertified and unregistered, or a vehicle that doesn't have a warrant of fitness or certificate of fitness.

Trade plates let you drive that vehicle to and from testing stations, specialist repairers and garages, in order to bring it up to the appropriate standard."

coming back from my company were i had been working on the vehicle to bring it upto standard.

Also what is interesting is i can legaly do a "Evaluation or testing of the vehicle. " once i have repaired or upgraded it , and if i fill out Annex A i can drive the vehicle more than 50kms away from my company hmm? so if i put bk te rapa down and run my curren on a d plate and im evaluating and testing the new engine/suspention? i am legal?

Heaps of people, including cops don't know how they work, if you can help it I would avoid using it to daily drive on if thats what your implying; if your not, ignore what I said.

Im pretty sure its only meant for limited use, ie test driving unregistered vehicles, showing prospective buyers, or transporting unregistered vehicles etc...

From memory there's a KM limit on it too (I think...) and if you're driving around with a d-plate and get pulled over you will need to prove that you're doing one of the above usually.

I didnt think you were allowed to drive a car with no WOF at all, even on a d-plate, unless you were on your way to either a Testing station or mechanic etc.

If you had a WOF, you wouldn't be using the D plates though. The whole idea of them is if the car hasn't been aloccated a plate yet, and can be test driven before being sold.

They aren't for driving any where aside from test drives, or from dealers to workshops.

Driving home on one is just asking for trouble.

It says it all pretty clearlly in that link

You have to be driving the vehicle for one of these reasons:
Demonstration of the vehicle
Delivery of the vehicle
Completion of construction of the vehicle
Repair or modification of the vehicle
Road testing in connection with inspection and certification of the vehicle
Evaluation or testing of the vehicle.

You must have your permit visible in the vehicle.

You must have carried out the safety check, and carry the safety check sheet in the vehicle.

Also, you have to be driving the vehicle to or from one of the addresses listed on your permit.

your vehicle is already nz registered, with no wof or rego, so the fine should stand.

my understanding on dealer plates is they are only to be used on vehicles that are not registered in the nz system. that are in the process of being complied and registered.

dealer plates have a lot of restrictions, limits and rules, depending on why and what they were issued for.

We drive all the new vehicles at work without WOFs with D plates all the time.
So I don't think a WOF is a big deal when using a D plate.

no the fact of the matter is what i am doing is LEGAL, but the cops don't know the laws and get shity when u try and inform them....... if i was just out for a drive then thats illegal but the fact of it was i had been at my workshop repairing the vehicle then taking it back to were it is stored... thus totaly legal.

how often have you been driving it with the D plate?

if you have just driven it a few times to and from work to fix it, then you'll prob get off.

if youv been driving it every day saying your fixing it... then you wont.

so write a letter.
if you take the "im right your wrong and a wanker" attitude then you wont get far.

sounds to me you tried telling the cop he was wrong with a bit of attitude....

also you can stil be ticketed if the vehicle is thought to be unsafe.
D plate doenst automaticly make yo safe from bald tyres etc....

What we do when we have a registered car with rego expired when we need to move it to places/test drives - we remove rego stickers and plates, put the d-plate and from there we go.

car has no plates except d plate no reg tag evan. i didnt give the cop any bullshit what so ever i was polite and told him i was allowed to drive it on the d plate the cop thinks d plates are ONLY for buyers who want to test drive a car. and ive only drive the car arround a few times to and from work and to pickup parts. not abused it at all

and also the legal forms i have to fill out make me check no tyres are bald i have todo a wof check and sign it off befor it can be driven else i lose the d plate
