Dodgy Dealings?

OK, so I start with a story...

A friend of mine was looking at buying a car. He took it for an AA inspection and was told that the car was riddled with rust.

So he takes the car to a panel beaters to see how much it would cost to repair the rust. $3,000 says the man.

My friend takes the car back and says "I took if for an inspection, the AA man tells me it's riddled with rust. So I took it to the panelbeater man. He tells me it's $3,000 to repair the rust. With this in mind I offer you $3,000 less than you were asking."

Seller's reply "Na, I'm in no rush to sell her."

Mates reply "What so you're just going to wait until you can sell it to some poor unsuspecting sap?"

Seller rambles on completely ignoring this.

NOW.

What do you do? Do you jump on an enthusiast's website and inform people of the cars defects to prevent said car from being passed to said poor sap? Or is there a better way?

If its got $3k worth of rust repair in it, you ought to be able to see it before taking it for an AA inspection 8O
Depends what sort of car it is, if its an old car you sort of expect that its going to need rust repair. If its new, then theres a problem and you'd expect there are many many other issues.

True so to clarify it is a $8,000 1996 sedan. Don't want to say anything more to describe the car because I don't want to do something dumb... yet.

there can be big problems with any car you potentially buy, no matter the age etc.

engine could be about to blow up, so if someone is willing to spend 8k on a car without doing any sort of checks on it, then more fool them I say.

would be like buying a house but being too cheap to get a building inspection.

i'm sure people do it all the time tho with both cars and houses. as the saying goes. BUYER BEWARE.

wouldn't worry about it man


that said, 3k worth a of rust in ANY 96' car is a worry :lol:

have they gone to any great extent to cover it up? just seems weird how 3k worth of rust can be easily hidden...

Ask the owner to put a brand new testing station warrant on it :D

If it fails on rust it gets put on the system until it is fixed properly

There is some very very dodgee deals going down on TradeMe...

I know a guy who did a straight swap his 200SX for a RX7 with one of the boss's of a major car sales yard here in CHCH....

Everything seems alright but they take it into a mechanic to get it checked... turns out its had major accident damage and the engine is on its last legs. Nearly all the front suspension/steering had to be replaced...

Anyway... its turned into a legal battle at the moment as the car was sold with a brand new wof but it definitly wasn't up to wof standards. (had five major items)...

Moral of the story..... buyer beware...

The rust was in the rear wheel wells and has basically gone across the back seat - without lifting seats out it's hard to see it.

Got a bit more of a story from my mate, when he showed it all to the guy the guys comment was - oh I didn't know about that one. So i'm guessing he knew and was just being a prick about it.

To put everyones mind at rest it wasn't on toyspeed, it wasn't a toyota. It is in hamilton, it is a white 1997 (sorry I know I said 1996) Subaru RS-B It has done just over 100,000KM. The panel beater recommended staying well clear of the silver/white ones because they reflect the heat too much and don't allow the car to dry out properly. We did however look at a really mint 1996 tonight in Maroon/Burgundy/Wine colour and it looked, felt and drove magnificently, however, I just can't trust a Scoobie.

I was thinking about mentioning it on subclub just so that noone in hamilton gets scammed by the guy. He is apparently looking at flogging it off to some young guy who's too stupid to know any better.

Subaru's suck a.s.s anyway! Well mine does, spent heaps to keep it going while im building my Trueno.
Why don't big anvils drop out of the sky in real life?
I went away for a week and left it unlocked and still no one wants it. There are about a billion for sale on trade me........good luck finding one that isn't a piece of shit!

funny that. a mate bought a EH Holden with fresh WOF. found rust in chassis. took it back and gave the vendor (part-owner of big panel shop) 2 options to repair or refund. too much of a major to undo the hidey-work and fix properly, so was refunded.

not exactly.if the vehicle has obvious safety faults then all he has to to is give the WOF issuer a chance to rectify the faults or send a formal complaint to LTSA. it would be far easier for the WOF issuer to fix the faults , than to be struck off.

The workshop was notified as soon as the faults were found and have failed to rectify the problems... :) .... All dealing have been through a lawyer and they had been given a letter outlining the work that needed to be carried out.... still waiting for a response.

Its a real long story with alot of information I have missed out (like the car sales man trying to do the dirty on them and ringing him and saying his car had blown up,,, then sending him photo's of a smashed car that was quite clearly not his one)

That almost gives the yard away. They must be the same guys that try telling you 'we aren't making a cent on these installed alarm systems (points to $250 Installed Uniden alarm) for $550 installed. Or On Road Costs for a NZ new car.
