Actually no, the government is currently writing new legislation that makes having an opinion illegal and voicing anything even remotely opinionated is punishable by death (this may just be a rumor).

I agree with you in that I don't like a lot of the culture associated (sp?) with drifting in NZ, but that doesn't change the fact that it's hulluva fun way to drive a car!

either, neither and both.
as Clerk of Course, i was summoned to the metering point for the local round of Drift South, as many cars were either exceeding or getting close to the max. dB.

some observations were:
external wastegates dumping in close proximity to the ground, peaked well above,
as track temperature increases, so does the volume of the 'squeal' produced on the same car using the same tyres all day,
certain tyre patterns a create a much higher pitched 'squeal',
initiating the drift by pure wheelspin (i.e little weight transfer) creates more noise,
certain open? BOV's were very close to being over.

wind shift also creates a few problems. the crowd/PA noise is louder (as are the cars), it also carries the smoke cloud onto (not above) neighouring properties.

Us car enthusiasts should buy all the houses near racetracks. I think it would be great. The sound of engines all day long with the sweet sweet smell of tire smoke. I wouldn't need a TV.

External wastegates that are louder than 95dB shouldn't be on the track anyway.

Yes,

I run a screamer pipe on my race car,
but it is full length beside the exhaust and exits separatly beside the main exhaust,

and both pipes are under 95dB with no mufflers.

There is no reason for a car the be noisier than 95dB, on or off the track.

No idea, the turbo makes the main pipe quiet as it acts like a muffler,
and I presume the shape and length of the other pipe take care of the screamer noise?

I totally agree... however there are many excuses why people 'think' they need to be noisier.

Just a note on damage to the tracks: Taupo has just increased the price of their private hire drifting events due to the excessive damage to the venue. The biggest issue when it comes to track damage is that when drifter go off the seal they don't back off (some say it's dangerous to do so) and the continued spinning of the wheels destroys grass surface. When a normal circuits car goes off in the damaged grass area it can cause it to lose more control or roll over where it usually wouldn't on a smoother grass surface.

I was involved in the meeting with the Taupo race track management last week talking about the changes that need to happen with drift events to make them viable to run in the future. I was genuinely shocked at the damage that is caused by drifters, damage to grass, Armco, signage, track surface and the list goes on. All because it appears that there is no real control over driver behaviour or encouragement to improve.

What most drifters (and others) don't realise is that the surface of a race track is nothing like the surface of the road. Excessive spinning of wheels heats up the surface faster than normal roads and if this happens near the edge of the track it creates a little lip which is so very dangerous to none drifters. I have to say that the lack of respect for the venue is shocking at most events I've been to. I listened to recounts of drifting at Taupo and the lack of respect to the management and the rules that are there for a good reason was sad. It seems its all about being a hero for some and it may be great for a spectacular to please the crowds but it is going to mean that soon there will only be events run under a Motorsport NZ permit.

Drifting is here to stay whether you like it or not. Motorsport NZ is working with affiliated drift clubs to make things safer and fun and most of all to preserve the venues. Why would Taupo want a bunch of disrespectful twits at their track when it would compromise them getting an event like A1GP... they wouldn't.

I've read what a few of you have said here and sorry to say some of your are in la-la land. Shame really as if people did research, asked questions and listened, perhaps ‘car enthusiast’ wouldn’t have such a battle on their hands with the public at large. I’ve been a ‘car enthusiast’ for over 20 years now to be honest it’s the lack of knowledge and respect that cause the discord with the ‘them and us’ attitude. Oh yes, and a non motorsport type person buying a house close to a track... what ARE they thinking!!

Join a MSNZ car club and do it properly!

Ah well... won’t change… probably just wasted five minutes on the above.

It was loud, real loud.
