Performance/tuning books?

Postby Burning Angel » Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:17 pm

After looking around the internet for a bit i seem to have come up with little to no concrete information on performance engine building.

This may be due to my poor searching skills but i think its more likely that the people in the 'know' aren't going to give the info away for free.

im interested in finding out how to build intake and exhaust systems that are properly tuned for a particular engine etc and all the theory behind it.

So what i am after is suggestions of good books on the subject of normally aspirated engine building/tuning.

Not sure if this is what ya after:
http://www.amazon.com/Blueprint-Build-4 ... 1903706920

But I like looking on Amazon...they send to NZ (most of the users, just make sure you check what each users sendin costs are, as ive found books for a higher price, but after the shipping has been added, it worked out cheaper than the low price books), plus ive brought new books off Amazon for $10 usd, and the books have been here on trade me for $50

I love Amazon...it helps feed my "Deadliest Catch" love too

hmm that does seem to fit the bill, but it says out of print and has no price.

im not familiar with amazon so i don't know if its available?

i looked through alot of the books on there and most seem to be v8 or forced induction oriented. there are alot for hondas too.

seeing as i have to custom build the intake and exhaust(no aftermarket parts) i thought i might as well do it properly.

look on amazon for books by A . Graham Bell like
http://www.amazon.com/Four-Stroke-Perfo ... gy_b_img_a
or
http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Engine-Tun ... pd_sim_b_5

I have his 2 stroke book and I just got his turbo book , both of which are excelent , read the reviews at the bottom of the amazon pages to get an idea which one is more suitable for what you want .

Depends on your background as to what you'd find useful or interesting.

www.speedtalk.com has an awesome forum for technical engine building. Also www.v-eight.com goes into a bit of theory too.

There are a lot of books available for what you want.
Try these guys www.technicalbooks.co.nz
I have a 30 year old book somewhere written by a couple of poms about intake and exhaust theory, mostly discusses pommy 4 bangers.

You could also try www.Abebooks.com- can often get the books for cheaper still- I'm picking up a book on Beamers I saw in the shop for NZ$65 for about $25...

For performance engine basics you really can't look past 4 stroke performance tuning. However it won't go into detail in regards to Helmholtz tuning, which is a book or seven unto itself. Bell's book should be a starting point for anyone who wishes to performance enhance thier engine. The only thing that I have a slight quibble over is the book is getting on now. Although all the techniques for getting power are all very valid I'd like to see a reference to software dyno's for iterative testing.
The answer is Helmholtz!
