Again, its your brain were talking about protecting. Buy the best helmet you can afford.

How much are you planning on spending ?

I was expecting about 500ish, but if its not going to be sufficient, i will pay more. Its a matter of putting it off until i CAN afford it :P I dont want any features i dont need, the babre minimum in terms of features, but a good quality and brand.

The other thing, is make sure you buy a comfortable crash helmet ... this means 'don't buy online without trying'. I've had a ghastly helmet that had all the right standards on it, but was painful to wear.

Jazza, $500 will buy you a super duper helmet. But despite the old adage "you get what you pay for" cost does not necessarily determine quality.
In respect of helmets anything with the standard mark as required by MNZ Sched. A will be fine for most applications. And you can buy some of these for as little as $100.
Additional cost is as often about extra fitments (HANS posts, intercom etc...), or simply branding, as it is about quality.
Ignore the testosterone fuelled nonsense you hear from 'experts' that say "if you've got a hundred dollar head buy a hundred dollar helmet".
The motorsport apparell industry thrives on this kind of crap.
I've used basic NZS1884 or Snell rated helmets for over 30 years, largely because of their lightness and comfort - and also because of their low cost. And I've had more accidents and whacked my head more often than most and the helmets have been fine.
