To sell or part out?

Postby Elmendorf » Sat May 30, 2009 12:38 pm

Ok, so I have decided to say goodbye to my AE101 Trueno. Question is, would it be better to part it out or sell as a whole. Car has done 280km's has a silvertop and is superstrut..... Body wise the car has a dent in the rear 1/4 panel and the paint has that typical early 90's toyota clear coat issue as well as scratches.

It does have new things such as coil, lead, distributor cap and rotor, plugs, rocker cover seals. Car is wof'd and rego'd

Whats the general consensus?

Probably easier to sell complete...given the age and condition of most of the bits, they wont be worth huge amounts, and is it worth the hassle stripping it?

it's a tough one, and i've thought about it alot with my car. i'd get more for my car in parts than as a whole, but its whether or not you have the time to do it, cause parting it out leaves a shell or whatever sitting around for ages as you take bits off, or you have a garage full of car parts and alot that people may never need or want.

i say it comes down to time and space for parts

you could prob sell it for 2k. maybe 2.5 if your lucky
i dont see you getting that much for it in parts
i reckon 1000-1500 in parts if you can sell them all

2-2.5k?!

I just bought two (yes two, woops) EP82's in factory standard trim, unmolested and well maintained motors with 170-180k on each, both drive very nicely for less than 2.5k. One has basically flawless bodywork with barely a wisp of clearcoat fade, the other is a little more scratched up with a few more paint issues but certainly one of the better ones i've seen. An average condition AE101 with 280km's would surely go for significantly less.

If I were you I'd be happy with $1000-1500 for the complete car.

Easier to sell as is.

You usually part out if the car has something really wrong with it. In the case of my AW, there was heaps of structural rust and things that would set me back heaps to fix, so I ended up parting it out.

Or if you want to make more money and can be BOTHERED parting it out :P
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Whats a starlet price got to do with a Trueno price?

There was one on here @ $1 reserve on trademe. Granted it was better condition, rebuilt motor, it went for around 3k. So that could be an option for ya :)

Definately agree with this.

Ive parted out my 200sx, it was made alot easier and worthwhile because its got alot of aftermarket parts on it and i have the time and space to do it. Dont think i would bother doing it to an ae101, some parts will go fast while the rest will sit around. I was lucky in that my shell sold pretty quickly.

nah. just because you can get some that cheap, doesnt mean they all are.
i havnt seen this particular car. but unless it was a dog i wouldnt sell a 101 for less than 2k. they are a very good car for what you pay for them

Thanks guys. I don't really want to sell the car but I now have no choice thanks to a whooping lawyer bill  Its a great daily and really good on gas so I'll be sad to see it go, but since the market is dead for race cars I'll convert the starlet as much as possible back to a daily and just keep that for now.

Will look to sell the car complete at this stage I think.

Ive just sold my average looking but tidy everywhere else AE101 for $2100.
I wouldnt sell one for less than 2k, if it was a little rough. A tidy example should fetch between 2.5-3k.
