Opinions wanted - TRD vs TEIN springs

Hi,

I'm looking to replace the springs and shocks on my ST205, its currently way to low, the front shocks are on the way out and she hits the bump stops whenever I go over a bump at speed. So......

I can still get the Front TRD springs for the car with a claimed 30mm lowering over stock, this according to my searching of the forum would work fine with stock (new) shocks. Or I can go TEIN all round for the springs.

So people, your opinions please, and also if anyone has gone the tein way did you use stock shocks?

id use teins with kyb or monroe shocks mate. easy to find and fit + teins ride really nice.

Havent tried tein, I believe Tein lower more than TRD (40mm, vs 30mm) I run TRD Springs with KYB\Tokico combo.

Tein or TRD you cant go wrong, id go for whichever one you can get cheaper.

PS: get TRD Soft, the TRD Hard are just way to hard.

I believe the same goes with TEIN springs. Our roads are no good for hard springs.

yep very true

as for which is best, pretty hard to choose between those two. Tein do go lower, with same spring rates as TRD
how ever if you want a full set....

Monroe! HAHAHA are you kiddint, "The worlds worst shock" isnt that their slogan?

Go with Tein, but really im sure it wouldnt make a hell of a lot or difference.

Best Performance mod ive EVER done... i dont think i can say more.

I loved how my car handled, i love how much more power it felt like it had beacuse it didnt waste power droop or sagging when you gassed it.

Totally the best money i ever spent, if i ever do sell my car like my missus is making me i will buy a new work car but i will insist on tein adjustables..

I've heard a few people that I trust comment that Monroe's aren't very good shocks.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I used to think that.
Then I worked for a place that sold both KYB and Monroe so I got quite a bit of experience with both brands.
end result, I didnt even consider fitting KYB's to my car, I went with Monroe GT Gas.

Why? Better valving. KYB's in NZ are stock replacements, whereas Monroe offer uprated valving (note the monroe original's are equivalant to stock/KYB's) Also Monroe offer a much much better warranty.
And finally we just didnt have any issues at all with Monroes. every single "fault" that came back was due to either fitting to the wrong car, or not fitting bump stops (you'd be amazed at how many "mechanics" forget that)

Interestingly most of the ppl i have heard say "Monroe are crap" are ppl with exsessivly lowered cars.... Ie ppl who bought the cheapest shock they could and fitted them incorrectly....

So, moral of the story: There is nothing wrong with monroes. and buy the right parts to duit what your doing :wink: then fit them correctly!

have to agree with you Warwick, from my person experience there is nothing wrong with Monroe, I swapped over to them in the Corona when the Toyota ones needed replacing (fronts) ran them with King springs. Never had an issue with them & they performed very well, I lost count of the number of trips between wgtn & the Naki I did with them.

Like wise with the TEIN springs I am running in the Tureno, once again very happy with the setup

Well, I have Monroes in my AE101 (err. now my sisters) anyway, they are too soft, they were ok, I had them over 60k, but they progressively becoming softer. I think OEM would be better option.
Oh and you know my stance on lowering...

60k is a long time for shocks....
were they Gt Gas? or original? GT Gas are quite a bit stiffer than origionals

shock life is 40ks so you can't really blame the shocks for that.

I'm with warrick, i have fitted SOOOO many of these shocks and never had a problem.

I had Monroe GT Gas in the front of the MR2 for about 60,000 kms before they putted out and made for bad handeling.
