If anyone's interested, I have a whole bunch of suction-cup camera mounts on the way from the states at the moment.

They have a standard-thread mounting screw on them, so if you already have a cheap DV camera you can use these mounts to attach it to the windscreen/outside of your car. Bit easier than rigging up a tripod on the back seat with bungee cords!

pm me if interested, I expect them to arrive mid to late next week and can supply pics and better info then.

I've used a vholdr thing that i borrowed off a mate who uses it on his helmet when he's riding his dirt bike around. Sound isn't very flash tho but i'm not sure if that has something to do with the casing or not. Think they are around 300 for the setup that gives you the mount plus some editing software thats pretty easy to use.
Will try and have a look at it at some stage to see where the mic is and if it couldn't be adjusted slightly for better sound
Have found when using a conventional camera i need to pack the underneat of it with foam and use some kind of foot thats shaped to fit the camera to stop it from vibrating to much where as the one above takes out all the vibration etc, something built inot it. Only issue is no remote so can't start it if it's out of reach but does take a micro sd card that you can change for a bigger one and does 4 hours recording, recharge off usb port to

Just found the site, seems they were more expensive than he told me - unless he got a cheap deal through his shop

I had a play today with the mic in the go-pro.

Soldering both pins of the mic to the circuit board helps a little (one is attached to a fly lead which runs to another board - but not the rear circuit board where the other pin is attached.
Attaching a bigger mic/pickup seems to stop the sound from clipping as much, however the real problem is a massive amount of background noise (must be from the compression they are using, as with no mic attached its still pretty loud).

I still have issues with the camera stopping from recording after 10 seconds. Running it on AA's seems to alleviate this (seems to want extra amperage when the camera tries access the sd card), or a 3.6 Nicad pack I had works a treat :)

I'm just having a play with my ATC2K at the moment. It's a bullet cam that I bought for skiing but comes with a handle-bar mount. Playing with the idea of having it on the rear-cross bar of the roll-cage.

Just went for a test drive and the footage seems alright, but suffers the same issues of sound that the GoPro does. It's the waterproofing combined with vibration of the car, road noise etc.

I just bought another digital camera the same as what I have already been using off trademe,

decided that for the extra money for a go pro or similar, was not going to be worth it if the sound quality is worse than what I already had.

Only thing it really lacks is a wide enough angle view.

Oh th eworst thing I forgot to mention about the go Pro.

There is no display screen so if you mount this on the rear window you can't see where your aiming!
Or any window really as even the little aim hole is tiny to look through! So I had to keep taking recording it in place, take the camera off the stand, test it out on the PC etc.

I mounted my Video camera in my car for Rally of the North last weekend and it worked supurb.
It's a Sony HDD camera. It won't record onto the Hard drive but has an SD card Slot so I used that and not one problem. Even went over a massive jump landing very hard with no glitches.

Best part is it has awsome sound to go with.

The mount is just a flat piece of alloy with foam on top, clamped onto the rollcage and then the camera is bolted to it via the standard tripod mounting screw

I'm looking at modifying my ATC2K with a different lens to get some better wide angle.

There are plenty of sites showing how to mount different lens' or a 3.5mm mic jack onto theese for better sound & video.

If you are looking at buying new, VHOLDr are about to release a ContourHD 1080P all-in-one unit that would be worth a serious look!
