Exhaust tone

Postby Vertigo » Sun Aug 15, 2010 10:28 am

Sup guys.

What kind of tone can I expect from various exhaust systems? Im pretty clueless about this at the moment. I have a pretty stock AW11 - sounds good inside, but probably a bit tinny out.

So Id like some opinions, lets say the differences between various muffler/end-tip combinations on a 2 inch exhaust, and say the differences between various pipe sizes when using a single muffler/tip (for arguments sake, Ill let the first poster pick which).

Keen for thoughts!

And while Im not really looking for maximum drone, feel free to compare those parts that produce it.

Keep the tip to the pipe size or maybe a tiny bit bigger to avoid drone
The torque band is wide and the road is narrow

I got a whole AW11 exhaust here that will bolt to your car. Has two cobies.

Sounds choice. Thinks it's got a 4" tip on it haha but I would cut that off if I were to use it again.

Can get some picture if you want.

Can deliver it in Auckland next week too if you're keen.

AdrenalineR mufflers from Hastings are great. Alot of that drone comes form frequencies in the exhaust sound waves not being muffled \ cancelled out inside the can.

Pretty hard to do with a straight though style, but these guys use a 3 layer baffle system (steel wool, glass, ceramic) inside compared to cheap mufflers that use plain old steel wool.

I run to of these in a V config on my 3SGTE MR2 and have nearly stock level DB rating with a deep sporty tone (no drone).

Bear in mind the exhaust blades in a turbo act a resonator so take some of the sound out, so may not be as good in an NA.

I paid $240 per muffler (custom sized to my spec), polished stainless, lifetime warrenty, free Tshirt and stickers. Awesome NZ made product.

Here's one from my 4age car with a short exhaust (about the same length as a MR2) and a single straight through muffler made by Dytech , 2 1/2 inch all in stainless. Ended up a bit loud so back to the drawing board .They are building me a offset in and out muffler at the moment, very helpful and good prices .

from my experience with exhuasts, the length of pipe after the back muffler seems to have the biggest bearing on tone/resonance etc
