Nope, the plate is totally separate to the car..

go here to get the 'Transferring Entitlement of Personalised Plates' form http://203.44.170.34/internet/NewZealand/PersonalisedPlates/TransferofEntitlement/tabid/134/Default.aspx
Fill err out and fax it back and its all done.

NB to reprint a plate, the plate must be in the same name as the registered owner of the vehicle.

I assume this means you sold your beasty?

You cant put the old plate on, have to get a new standard rego plate.
i.e to change your car with current [owsum] to [ayb234]
You need to take in your current Personalised plates into the AA/VTNZ (take them off the car) and fill out a form.

Costs $14.75 to get issued the new standard plates and to do the change over (14.50 for the plates, 0.25 for the change over)

It takes as long as the queqe is...ie you go in pay your money and get the plates...Ive done it inless than 2min before.
