Love em or hate em, this is interesting news

Mazda Motor Corp. has canceled production of its RX-8 rotary engine sports car, citing falling sales and stringent global emissions standards.

Sadly, unsurprising - they just didn't do anything interesting with the motor... which you have to do if you are going to give it the negatives of having a rotary, don't expect reliability or fuel efficiency. So now they are no doubt not going to release something which could stir peoples interest and might actually sell well :(

Well the Renesis did improve fuel efficiency and reliability compared to RX7's 13B REW, but that's not saying much.

Obessed with rotary much? The point is that the rotary engine cannot overcome it's limitations as of now, which is ever tighter emissions regulations. Mazda is doing the right thing, cutting their losses and putting RX anything on halt. Everybody saw it coming, but you act all surprised. Go hug your "rota" to sleep bro.

For those who didn't read the full article:

And the RX-8's demise may not be the end of the rotary engine at Mazda. A source says engineers in Hiroshima are still working on the next generation, 1.6-liter rotary engine, code-named 16X, that is said to have lower emissions, better fuel economy and more power.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Its possible when the design increases thermodynamic efficiency.
