I think pretty much anyone who enjoys driving or likes twisties should own one. I'd definitely buy one if one comes up at the right price.

I've owned three of them (one turbo'd), but I'm a real old rager.

:lol:

They're a fun car, but omfg are they slow (1600). Fun around corners, mega predictable, nice gearshift. They're like an AW11 but with less rust (note I don't say, "no rust"). My only real problem with them other than slow is that I'm too tall, so I have to slouch like a mofo or the slipstream used to take my hat off my head.

yes, slow is right. getting dragged off at the lights by late model people movers is not great for an already damaged ego, haha. they dont seem to rev particularly easily either, compared to say a similar era 4AGE. im already having turbo thoughts, seems like a very well trodden path. one thing at a time though!

the main appeal is like you say, predictable behaviour, with beautifully precise steering and a wonderful composed, unflappable sort of quality. it just keeps turning in!

it makes them a joy to drive, carrying speed is essential to get any sort of pace out of it so you need to concentrate and so forth. i find it very engaging.

what sort of power was the turbo version making? how did you like it?

the head clearance is a bit of a pain. im not quite in your league, but i do find the top of the windscreen impinges on my field of vision a little. i ended up leaning the seat back further than i would normally to try and mitigate that, which actually suits the seating position fairly well.

My dad has one, 1800cc. Been through Jackson Supercharger kit up to a TD05 plus Link ECU.

Current set up is 160rwkw's (or so) at 13psi (ish) on standard long block, you'll need an uprated clutch though. Which is well over double standard.

Old supercharger set up only managed about 110rwkw's.

I've driven it a few times and its very quick with fast spool, handles awesome with whiteline swaybars and Koni adjustable shocks. Also been passenger at Manfeild a few times (why do my cars always break? :lol: ), seems pretty tail happy but it doesn't have an LSD yet.

I'd have one but being 6ft its just too small.

I almost bought a really tidy 94 nz new model a few years ago when I had my supercharged mr2. The mx5 is really slow! even the 1.8L

I'm old now and want one again, I didn't feel like they are too small at all and I'm 6'2". Y'all are just out of proportion.

the turbo one I had was putting out bugger all power, but had massive wall of torque from practically no revs. That made it a really easy highway car because you could overtake in 5th.

It was ok, but still not quick. Had an open diff so was utterly impossible to get out of corners without loud noises and tyre smoke.

Overall it was not a great package, which is not to say that if you had a better turbo conversion with the appropriate suspension and diff to go with it that it wouldn't be fun.

A workmate had one, where someone was prepping it as a basic targa car, but sold it on instead.

So just bilstein suspension, LSD, wider wheels and grippy rubber.

Took it for a bash around up scenic drive, and found it amazingly underwhelming in every respect compared to my daily driver at the time.

(MR2 which weighed less and had more power)

Perhaps it might have held more appeal with a bit more time behind the wheel, but first impression didnt leave much of an impression.

Was quite embarresed when I had one come past me on the front straight at Taupo a couple of years ago while in my Evo, found out later it was running a 400hp SR20 :o
Looked like fun to drive :lol:
