Took the engine apart this week and thought it would be fun to show what happens to engine parts when this type of failure happens.

First thing is that the inside of the engine is coated with metal flakes. No, we are not panning for gold here as if I was, I'd be rich.

Big end berrings.
Cylinder 1 to 3 is left to right. The damage gets worse the further from the oil pump the berrings sit. There was no sign of Cylinder 4 berrings left in the conrod. They are shiny as they had just been cleaned.

Main caps, block side.
Again, furtherest from the pump sees the most damage. #3, #4 and #5 have chunks torn from there surface

Crank.
See the black staining on #1 big end. This shows alot of heat was generated. The oil that came in contact during this heating stage has burnt causing the dark apperance.

#1 big end surface.
This will need regrinding. before it does, the crank will need checking for straightness and crack testing .A quick measurement came in at 41.8mmon the top and bottom sides instead of 42.

#1 Conrod
Photobucket was being a bitch and couldn't upload the piston. It had impact marks from hitting the cylinder head. This, plus the clearance from no berring equals bent, burnt conrod

Oil Filter
I cut this open to see whats inside.

Oil Pump Housing Plate

Oil Pump Housing
I was expecting major damage here as its pumping oil that has only been through the mesh on the bottom of the pick up. Quite a suprise.

Pump Gears.
Again, only light scratches.
Well, thats the tour.
I know I check my oil more often than what I use to after this happened!
