Members Projects Threads

Postby diss7 » Sun Sep 23, 2012 5:39 pm

Is there any reason why the members projects threads are secured, so that you can't link to them to anyone unless they are a member.

It is a pain maintaining multiple build/project threads on different forums, I was just linking back to Toyspeed, until it was pointed out to me that they only work if the person is a member.

At a guess, I would say that it is for security reasons, but surely if someone was worried about that they would either a: Not post pictures of their licence plate, or a far more effective method, b: not post pictures of their car at all.

If the above reason is the only reason, with almost 10,000 members, this forum has long past the days where any form of security could be really be there by making the area members only.

Even if the section could be split into two sections, open and closed, and members could opt to have their thread in either? At least that way it covers all bases.

I maintain my project on 5-6 forums. I just copy and paste content and answer questions per different forum. Other project threads I know of are also restricted to members with some entire forums on a paid subscription model.

You could also put a case forward for upgrading the board so we could have youtube in threads ;)

The site owner hasn't taken an interest in this place in some time (don't even think he's in NZ anymore?). I don't see updates happening any time ever.

Southern Skylines's forums are all members only apart from the Stolen Cars and Meetings & Events forum.

Our members just copy and paste from/to other forums though. :)

In a way it's to stop opportunistic car theives from seeing the shopping list of peoples projects. It's also slightly to try get people to sign up instead of lurk in the background. ;)

Forum upgrade is on the cards. It's complicated though in our situation so isn't an overnight thing. The ball is rolling though (and has been for a while) so just be patient and we'll get there.

As for members projects, I can't see it changing any time soon to be honest. It seems to work how it is and I haven't really seen many complaints to warrant a change.

Only speaking from my point of view.

Alex B, ownership? Who owns what exactly? Tis news to me

Who pays for the Domain? I always thought it was Wildcard.

May I suggest setting up a wiki, that forum members could put tech info, so we can reduce recurring questions in tech section?

Not the same. There is no revision control or collaboration. Only OP can update.
