3 and 5 l diesel engines

Postby crispy'86 » Tue Dec 18, 2012 6:39 am

thanks to loaning our hilux to the cousin in law and the 3l in it always being bit rattly it threw a leg out of bed on him. I've got from now to the end of the holidays to decide what to do with it, just testing the waters to see if anyone on here has access to a cheap 3 /5l engine or short block.

#Can't really commit to posting in the car parts/accessories as haven't got the cash ready to go out and buy an engine, just seeing what people have or have access to. I've got prices from anywhere between $800 for one that'd need to be reconditioned to $3000 but that's plain insane!!!
Either we try and struggle to save for an engine or it maybe a case of selling it as is

2nd time i've heard that, high-ish kms? (mates one had high 400s low 500s, off roading, high rpm, bonk.)

Careful about the 'recond' ones on trademe, got a td27 bottom end and the deck wasn't straight, long story short, i had to pay.

its all about supply and demands and with all the "imports" buying toyota commercials vehicles and shipping them off overseas, only drives the prices higher and higher, so that is how much people get for them....

L series engines are an interesting breed. If you got one for $800 remember that a rebuild will hike the cost way past that $3000 mark. There's not really any cheap options. If you can do a 1kzte conversion will be best but with the high kms it's probably not justifiable.
The GT4 is to Celicas what the GTR is to skylines.

An L series engine throwing a rod??? Wow, never heard that one, surely it must have been making a hell of a noise first? Ive rebuilt countless L motors, and some of them were in very bad shape, but never seen a leg out of bed.

A Nissan YD25 on the other hand...............................

The reliability side of things is the questionable thing. yes i know it's a toyota, but already done a diff, now the engine is had it, and i'm not doubting the gearbox would be the next thing plus not to mention other wear and tear items aka swivel hubd leaking, body starting to rust etc etc.
the previous owner had been some contractor/ pig hunter/. (was quite rough when we go it) that didn't really maintain it from what i saw when we bought it. The motor did rattle at 3000 rpm which i thought "one day i'll look into it" obviously it's a major now.

3.8 v6 would be an option if we had some form of budget, but looking more and more tempting to just sell as is...................................

If it is rough, sell it as it is, add those $3000, and buy another one that is running.

To rebuild one properly there's roughly 3 grand in parts, that's doing everything including the pump and injectors and new clutch and that was doing all the machining and assembly my self. Think we generally did them for $4500+ gst. Wish i'd keep my hiace now as i only sold it for $4500 with that brand new recon in it.

Its really handy having a ute to throw stuff on the back and go, you don't realise how much you make use of it. Plus towing is another good point of it. I'll get keen over holidays and pull head off it and check it for damage , then make decision from there
