Changes to V8 Supercars

Postby Flannelman » Thu Dec 11, 2014 10:01 am

Looks like some big changes are on the way

http://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/v8 ... 2017-30374

The biggest change is the introduction of turbocharged 4 and 6 cylinders to compete along side the V8s. I have been informed from a parts supplier that the control will be boost pressure on the turbos, however I severely doubt that this will be the only form of control form any turbo equipped engine. I would say that there will also have to be a mechanical restriction like on the WRC cars to keep power capped.

Sounds like fun

Surely it wouldn't be based on boost pressure alone, I mean a PSI reading is more a measurement of the breathing efficiency of the head of whichever engine.

But otherwise I think this is great news!

I wasn't living on this side of the world back in the early 90's but I watched some footage from around 1991 with AE82's and AE86's amongst the taxis, R32's and Cosworths etc.

BRING BACK THOSE DAYS! :D

Variety is the spice of life.

And besides, there wont be any V8's being made in Oz soon, by either of the main two companies in the sport, so I guess they are getting ready for the future of racing which will be small capacity turbocharged engines.

Either way...Go SVG, SM, and FC :D

Would love to see a version of this Lexus running round in V*SC.

Each to their own but I cant believe anyone who says it isnt worth watching!!!! And every year it gets better with new companies entering the sport with their own take on how to go about things, and having 3 Kiwis always up at the pointy end is just a massive cherry on the top for me

Im a motorsport fan first and foremost, but the V8SC series has more excitement in one race weekend that most other series do in a season. Wrestling those big lumps around tracks, smashing them off kerbs, rubbing concrete walls, solid rear axles etc etc... how can that be construed as boring is beyond me :)

Agree. V8 Supercars is a great spectacle, a unique one at that. Will be sad to see it change.

Agreed but not all change is for the worse though, so hopefully they just focus on the parity that makes the series so exciting, regardless of the engine type.

Was just great at Bathurst this year, stop to repair potholes.
They won't be able to sell this to the bogan fan base, time will tell if they can make it up elsewhere.

If I'm honest I would'nt like to see turbo's in this series.

I mean there are plenty of series round the world without them DTM being one I think V8's should look at.

This may sound backwards but I'd keep all the manufacturers using V8's to keep the series with some of its identity.

I mean if we take Toyota/Lexus they would have no worries swinging either direction V8 or turbo as they have configured there specified cars with either motors mentioned and have alot of experience.

For me as I mentioned the series needs to keep that V8 identity as its main thing everyone know's it so why change something that isn't broken.

Reith agree with you completely.

Im guessing the main reason they will be changing it is because Ford and HoldeN will no longer be building cars in Oz with V8 engines in them, so they will head in the direction of what is sold at the car yards. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday...its the same philosophy world over.

When Ford introduced the XR6 Turbo, all the Oz purists were swearing it was the end of the earth, then a few of them drove them, discovered they performed very admirably, quietly told their mates, and now half of them own them lol

As long as they do a better job that F1 did of making them still sound like race cars, I will be happy :)

The series has been V8 only for only a small part of it's life. This is, was and will carry on being the Australian Touring Car Championship. It's just morphed and changed every 5-10 years.

If they kept it V8 only it will die FAST. Volvo have already stated it does not fit their product image/plans, and I reckon they are unlikely to carry on after 2016 (when their currant contract expires) as they are scaling back their motorsports plans.
Nissan would much prefer a V6 option.

There will continue to be V8s for a while, but it's fast coming to a time when only large luxury cars such as 5 series and S class Merc will have V8s in a four door body.
Can't really see BMW and Merc being keen

It's part of what adds to the attraction I feel. Adds in that little bit of instability on corners.
