A quick cruise thru the regs seems to indicate that LED headlights have to comply
with the same rules as incandescent headlights. That is, lighting performance, dip
to the left, cutoff, colour etc. Failing to meet these standards can result in your
not receiving your next WOF.
There is also mention that a reputable NZ base supplier should be expected to have
checked to see that the bulbs supplied meet the requirements of the NZ regs. You
would need to be a supreme optimist to believe that an Aliexpress suppler will have
gone to the trouble of checking.
And interesting to dicover that HID conversions that bolt into an existing lens and
reflector setup are illegal in NZ. But you can use a "sealed beam" type conversion
where the bulb and lens/reflector are designed to work together. So I would hazard
a guess that the same philosopy can be applied to LED bulbs.
Cheap LED setups will often generate a crapload of glare without offering anything
startling in the way of improved visibility down the road. So get the missus to check
what they are like when the road is wet... that's when glare is at its worst for
oncoming traffic.
