Touchy Subject but, The AE86 Status

Postby Mr XXX » Sat Apr 22, 2006 2:01 am

Ok, so i bring this up, as i know there have been a few questions and comments about the subject..

Do you guys think the Ae-86 is, or will be a classic one day.....

Somewhere on this forum there was a conversation about the value of the ae-86, and how it is just a mass produced 80's car, that has grown this status as being a super mega drift machine straight off the bat....

anyway, I personally feel that the ae-86 is a great car, and has an ever growing cult following, that sooner or later, will make these a classic....
The real reason I bring this up is, because I was watching Discover Channel before, And they had a self produced ad about mechanical evolution in cars. they Started of with the Ford model t, then went to a Chevy, then to a 1930 Packard, then a 1942 VW beetle, then a 55 Chev, then, of all the cars I thought they could have, they cranked out the Toyota Corolla AE86, and then a futuristic designed car.

All of these were a 3d model of each car basiclly, and had a voice over of what people thought of the cars etc...

So that made me think, well, if they choose to lump the ae-86 in the same group as a VW beetle, and a 55 Chevy, then the ae-86 must be getting close to the status that these cars have

Anyway, thats what I think

Dont lock this thread for christs sake

Interesting to see they included it in a list like that of other "mass produced cars" :)

MrXXX likes to cause trouble ... BUY MY KE35

But I think it is a classic road car .. a classic race car & a classic drift car..
Of course you have created a thread which will spark all those who are mega down on initial D cartoon and try to bag ae86 .. but those lamos are entitled to an opinion but to state an opinion out of jealousy/envy of a car they have not owned or even driven a good example is just wrong.

CLASSIC = AE86 and even ae85 to a lesser extent

Classic already.

ae85 and 86 are already worth way too much money. though 8O

The fact remains there are other much better cars out there for 1/4 the price that aren't rusting to shit and gonna cost thousands to get anywhere near the chassis/suspension/drivetrain required to compete in NZ's drift scene.. by then they might as well be any other car cause the "essence" will be gone, well.. in my opinion anyway.

yeap, i think they will be or are already a classic of sorts, sure you can say that a te71 or ke70 hass the same or similar floor pan, but in reality will never be a popular or in demand as much as a ae86, anything that is in demand will be worth more than something that isn't, but that's not the point of this post.
I wouldn't put it in the same class as a model T or a 55 chev etc tho

beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or dreamer :)
I will be sad to see mine go as they are great cars to drive fast ( after a fair bit of tuning has been done at least )

along with the MX5, the GTR, the WRX,the rx7, the EVO, and to some extent the supra and the LS400 i guess.......

the point is the number of cult type cars out of japan has increased a number of times, there are more brands/models of car now than ever before. so for now, IMHO, its a cult car, not quite a classic but time will prove exactly what it is

IMO i really dont see what all the fuss about them is? They are too overpriced, sure they are an ok car but there are plenty more cars out there that are more deserving of that tag!

Just cos some kids watch a cartoon one drifting they are cool all of a sudden

just to add to my rant, and shit stirring, someone once told me that a classic is forged through history, mainly race history...
I dont think there is any argument that the ae-86 has proven its self on the track.
Im not just talking about drifting and the 'initial d' fad, they have been used since new to race circuit, rally, you name it, its done it.......

Oh and might I add, that in 2004 (i think) D1us was one by an AE-86, making 200hp.....

Go figure

They where 'cool' before that silly program ever existed. Im sure if tak used something else like a S13 the prices for them wouldnt be any different.

Lightweight RWD ftw. And they just dam look fine from any view.

Well, I think it kinna classic.. since they produce them from 1983-1987 and is around 20 years old.
The thing about they getting rusty and stuff, make them more valuable since is harder to keep them on the road to be road legal = less and less on the road!?
Peoples use them as rally, race, drift etc due to they are lightweight and have reasoable power on them and also RWD. Then again, once they gone that way, they are hard to become a normal road car again, hence making them less on the road and good condition.

Due to higher demand and less out there, price will sure go up!?.. or staying as it is at the moment. When you think of it normaly, is just an old Japanese car which still popular until today. There is not many old cars in Japan today. The more common old cars are AE86, datsuns etc... as I been told by my Japanese friends. Peoples still like it over there and is not cheap to keep an old car on the road in Japan. Is always cheaper to sell/trade in the car and get a newer car in Japan.

*shakes head*

Notice how the ones talking these cars up, are those who have owned/own/want to own one.. their mindset alone of which is the sole reason these rusty shitters are still alive and grossly overpriced.

Now a BDA, thats' a classic. The ET turbo Pulsar has a huge racing history, is that a classic? Or are they still just rusty shitheaps too?

Flame away, I don't give a rats' arse.. but having both those who love AE86s and those who really don't on this forum, you're always going to have the arguement.

Agreed!!

I daresay the high value of these old toyota's is based on a few factors
1) People view RWD as much cooler than other drivetrains
2) Drifting drifting drifting....
3) A japanese cartoon! (go go Power Rangers lol...:D )
4) People who cant drive crashing them and further pumping the price skyhigh for parts.

a super mega drift machine straight off the bat

Well thats not completely true, you have the mash the c***p out of the clutch because out of the box they are VERY underpowered.

A friend and I always joke it would have been great to buy up about 12 of these rusty Toys about 10 years ago, store them in a wharehouse and sell them to these types of people
The day i own one, will be the day my life is complete
and for big $$$ ( ie todays prices!!)

I always look at what ELSE I could buy for like 12,000...
