Government complaining about petrol tax revenue?

Petrol tax is % based, so as the price rises the government gets more tax per km driven. They are now noting that overall tax revenue from petrol is down!

haha, yeah, convince the general public that the government's missing out so they have an excuse to put the tax up again...the conspiricy plot thickens... :twisted:

The figures just don't add up.
"Petrol deliveries to service stations dropped by 3.7 per cent in the last half of last year, but diesel deliveries rose - also by 3.7 per cent. "


Okay, so they get a 3.7% loss in possible petrol tax. If the price of petrol hasn't risen. If it rises by 7.4% then they have mitigated all loss in petrol tax.. which it has and then some... and then they also have a 3.7% increase in diesel road user charges.

Do they think we are stupid?

Of course they do! . What Im more concerned with, is what can we do to stop them raising the petrol tax further to "make up their losses"

I actually counted that on the way to work today. I would have to have turned off and started again 4 times, and I'm talking like a 5km max trip.

Engine oil will hold a good temp for about around an hour, and oil pressure will build to normal levels within a few seconds of starting, so thats not really a factor.

However, with constant starting, you're bound to bugger your starter motor and put a lot of strain on your battery!

But really, I don't think I've EVER been in traffic THAT BAD that you will be sitting at a stand still for more than 30 seconds! Thats XTREEEEEEEEME traffic!

Doesnt starting your car use a substantial amount of fuel anyway??
They say that road user charges negates the effect of diesel being cheaper... what they forget to add is that a diesel vehicle gets better fuel economy.
Dads 2litre diesel rolla wagon gets 600km to a tank if you thrash it... 40 litre tank... $1.20 for diesel, $48 dollars a tank. Thats 12.5km per dollar. Mums 2.2litre camry, 60 litre tank, 500km to a tank $1.71 for 91, $105 per tank 4.75km per dollar.
Cant be bothered working it out with road user charges...

Another member on here used to have a 2litre diesel rolla wagon probably much like your old mans, but back in 97 that only used to cost $11 to fill from empty, back when diesel was 39cents a litre, i used to have a little ford lazer that was thrashed everywhere, that used to cost me about $31 to fill up was also a 40 litre tank but also when petrol was aroubd 69 cents a litre.

Now government people you can' tell me that the cost of keeping the roads to the substandard levels that we have come to expect from you is costing an extra 400 or so percent, isn't that what petrol tax and road user charges are supposed to be for??
Oh well i suppose the representitives of the people will help us get what we need, tax cuts better health care etc, oh wait i'm sorry i forgot we live in new zealand and the representitivs of the people tell us what we like and to stick it if we don't agree

not this diesel... it runs on diesel and neglect... me and my brother flat shift in it, do skids in it, push it against the governor regularly, do handbrake slides on the driveway, jump speedbumps.... it wont die:P
