Recommendations for who to rebuild Garrett BB Turbo?

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Wed Aug 16, 2006 9:36 pm

There is a place down in CHCH called "Turbocharger Reconditioners". They say they can rebuild my Ball Bearing Garrett, but the catch is that they are in CHCH and I'm in WGTN.

They need to see the turbo so before I send it off I want to shop around and see who else can rebuild BB Garretts.

Can anyone recommend, hopefully from experience, any other places in NZ?

Thanks

I can vouch for Turbo Reconditioners, I know his son, and a lot of the work they've done, pretty top notch. Last time I went there, there was a twin turbo V8 VK Commodore parked outside! 8O

You might want to send it to the only place in NZ with a VSR balancer - Alltech Diesal and Turbo Auckland.

09)443-6511 - Chris James

They can also upgrade the stock nylon bearing cage with aftermarket parts.

Nothing against you, true-no-turbo, but i have tried to deal with this guy 3 times now, and he is an utter moron.

Super super super overpriced, talks down on everyone, wastes a hell of alot of time, never does what he says hes going to, slow off the mark (is he drug - munted or is he actually retarded?)

I will not only never recommend him, but in fact reccomend the opposite. I have even spent the money to send my turbo to auckland to get it machined by a reputable person, the promised time is longer, the promised bill is similar, but at least i know it will be done on time and properly.

I will never send any of my or any of my friends, or anyone elses business to compressor aka stuart, ever.

Last time I talked with Alltech, they cannot rebuild my GT2540R, dunno about the T28 tho.

But they definitely cannot rebuild GT ball bearing'd turbos, while Steve Murch can, and did.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Akane your GT2540 (GT2876RS) was well, not in a very good condition.
(compressor wheel had rubbed on the housing same with the turbine wheel, which means new turbo materal..)
We can rebuild the GT Ball bearing turbos infact i have rebuilt over a dozen of them.

That was not true, the wheel had a bit of scrub but Steve said "it'll lose 10hp at most" or along the lines of that.

quote alltech "sorry we can't rebuild those we don't have the parts for the GT turbos, but we can offer you one of the T28's off a GTiR upstairs for $1300" endquote.

I got it built from Steve Murch with a new ball bearing center, sold it, and the new owner is very happy with it. Just like new.

Let me know if things has changed since. I'm keen to get my GT28RS rebuild too, since MCR thought it was cool to have a kink in my oil return line.

crnkin: cheers man, I will have to rethink my options now. (I'd already called him but haven't had him lok at it yet).

Akane: Would you mind letting me know what Steve Murch charged and what he did? PM if you don't want to share with the world 8)

Photdog: I take it you work for Alltech? My gt28r has done bugger all k's (less than 10,000k's) but now has enough play to JUST touch the exhaust housing. The wheels still look like new though. Could you please tell me if you are able to rebuild the core or what my options are? A contact number maybe? Thanks

PM sent

Oh BTW, Steve showed me why Garrett GT turbos and the so called "Nissan T28 ball bearing" turbos are different.

I still get kiddies insist that their "S15 T28 Ball Bearing" turbo is the same thing, I just shrug and walk away.

That might be the reason why some places can rebuild "T28 ball bearing" but cannot rebuild Garrett GT's

Does anyone have contact details for Steve Murch?

I can't find him on the whitepages site. Only thing I can find is that he works at Motorsport Engineering...but the only one I can find it Fast Cars Motorsport Engineering.

Is that the right place?

Hey no probs all good

Maybe hes not the best guy to use then, I have dealt with him a couple of times but was just for T3 gaskets etc not for any major turbo work, Got some advice on what turbo to go for before I bought the t3/4 and seemed to know his stuff, but he cant be very professional if he gave you those sort of dramas. I dont want to put slideways onto a Noddy!

We actually use Wade at Diesel and turbo for most turbo outwork and can say for sure that he is quite good.

Steve Murch and Chris both worked together on my hybrid HKS/Garett BB turbo's. They can nowadays be rebuilt and as i said earlier unless you use a proper VSR balancer your turbo will not go the distance

Akane, things have changed and its not uncommon for opinions to differ on certain jobs - ie your broken 2540 (which was 18 months ago im told)
