Insurance

Postby B ROWDY » Mon Jan 08, 2007 1:08 pm

Just having a think, if my car is a "write off" how will it affect my insurance in the future, will my premium go up? Will they cancel my insurance for good? 8O

If you are perceived as a higher risk the premiums will go up OR they will refuse to insure you... depends on the particulars of your crash really

Your no claim bonus will probably vanish.

They may elect to decline insurance cover for you on your next vehicle.

So yes, it will very likely cost you more money to get insurance, unless your write off was somebody else's fault, and that can be proved, and the person who's fault it is can pay.

Hmm, well I was the only one that crashed, and if its a write off it will be because the car is quite rare and parts are expensive and hard to come by, also the paint job is expensive since it was a custom made HOK job, not so much for my poor driving since I wasnt speeding and didnt hit anyone else etc

Insurance companies don't care... if it's write off and you were driver and it's no one else's fault then in their eyes it MUST be your fault as someone has to be to blame.

Therefore your premium will go up, NCB will be lost and/or insurance will be refused in future.

you loose the no claims, fairly similiar probably... a crash is a crash to them... its all about the numbers

they aim to charge you more than you will cost them in claims... so if you are more likely to crash they will charge you more to compensate...

it does pay off though when you hit some $40,000 monstrocity :D

i would imagine it will definately go up...

They may or may not continue to insure you, would depend on a few things, like your age, the curcamstances ( no i cant spell ) surrounding the write off ( like if it was your fault, or someone elses ) etc. etc.

You're being shafted if your excess is that high. I'd go find another insurance company anyway.

That's very high, unless you've deliberately opted for a higher excess to bring the cost of your premiums down.

Some cars have a high "malicious damage" excess, such as WRX's, and convertibles.

At an educated guess, I'd say you've got an imposed excess due to the increased 'risk' that is posed by any modifications you've done to the vehicle. You've said custom paintwork , stereo and wheels etc? those things will force an insurer to do something like that. As Leon said, an upside is lower premiums..

Custom paint, stereo is worth less than the $1500 cut off they have and its got standard 14"s on it
