Cat Converter Qn.

Hey guys,

I've got a question regarding a Corolla Station Wagon that I've been looking at.

There are two issues:
1) The cat converter has been taken off, and I would like to have one
2) The back right wheel rubs

*Firstly replacing the cat converter is it a major expense?
*Can any damage be done by removing it?
*I've been told the wheel rubbing is common with 17in wheels with wider tyres, but why does it only happen on one side?

You don't need a cat, and there is no harm in not having one.
Why do you want one?

That said, it should be easy to track down a Cat for it, will be really cheap second hand, although a second hand Cat won't do much in terms of emmisions.

As for the wheel, where is it rubbing? pull the wheel off and have a look.

If it's only rubbing on one side it's probably no big deal, maybe a piece of plastic inner guard or something.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

because it will soon be mandatory to have one in working order if your car is from 91 or newer.

Yeah that is what I heard also deaf_rattle. Good point on the inner-guard Punter.

Was a nice car, but sounds like alot of hastle!

Fingers crossed its 93, then the racecars safe, or 94 and both my cars are safe :P

the unleaded fuel we run here produces some really really nasty stuff when burnt. cat converters are designed to help remove that stuff.
however in typical nz government fashion when they introduced unleaded they decided to ignore that..... despite every other country in the world using them.....

imo cats should have been mandatory from that point onwards.

as I understand the proposed changes regarding emissions, is that "for the moment" it is only going to be a visual test, as outfitting all the WOF places with sniffers would be outrageously expensive.

So, unless your car is running really badly, it shouldn't be hard to pass the visual test with flying colours with or without a cat...

FYI: My cat is out and I still pass the sniffer test for emissions according to VTNZ in central dunedin... I wasn't even aware that they tested it until they told me.

Make careful note of the "for the moment" comment.

Didn't Land Transport and the Govt decide not to pursue emissions testing about two years ago citing cost as the main hurdle?

Meh, I was talking about harm to the car.

I don't care about the environment, If I cared about crap like that I wouldn't drive a car.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

lol, so every person who considers the environment/health should not use cars?...as apposed to just being aware and doing what little they can whilst not giving up onall modern technologies.lol

Back on topic. You could fit a 2nd hand cat, and perhaps a low mileage one would be the best bang for $. A new one will set you back $$ (call around for a few quotes) and depending on the year/price of the car it could sway yourwant for one.
