AE85 AE86 - Rotary. All Opinions WELCOME!

Ok, what to we all think about this car....
Image
AE85 Toyota Trueno Notch

And this motor....
Image
13B-REW

:?: :?: :?:

Im personally not a huge fan of these motors, but after getting an idea on what these little motors can put out, i really think that the +/- 900Kg Trueno would make a good conversion. Seeing as the Wankel motor isn't really a torque-y motor down low...sounds a lot like a 4A-GE...im thinking a more powerful light weight motor like this is going to pull it along nicely without doing too much to the motor....reliability....power....okay, maybe not economy but hey this is not a daily driver.

A motor like the one iv pictured will make somewhere in between 255Hp to 276Hp with its Twin Turbo design much like the one from the 2JZ-GTE, pushing 10Psi on the first turbo from 1800Rpm to 4500Rpm, then the second turbo kicks in and pushes 10Psi again right through to redline....

Give me your thoughts & ideas..or even any hints & tips that could help me out.

P.S. is there a Mazda forum i could look on to find more info?? Iv already raped http://en.wikipedia.org for all info.

Many thanks in advance! 8)

There's a blue race AE86 in aussie with a 20b in it... goes real hard to.
Good luck with the conversion.... although you might get some pureists on here tell you to stick with the 4AGE or go 4AGZ/TE

Theres a vid on the net of a 20b powered 86, it pulls away at a very rapid pace! I reckon its good to be different, nothing wrong with a well setup rotor. Its the idiot rotor drivers which give them a bad name IMO. And monkeys who dont set them up right and they blow up :P

do it, its an 85 so screw the purists anyway. it will be insanely quick, extremely fun, maintain its balance (as opposed to 2JZ conversion - not to mention being easier) and best of all there are many proven ways to make insane power out of these things.

what are 13B's worth these days anyway?

The one pictured at the moment is on TradeMe for $3.5k, comes with a tranny and has only done 70,000kms...

Price wise its a little unnerving, but the performance would be insane! And yeah, weight dist over the wheels should still be pretty good!

around a track it'd be faster than the one with a 2JZGTE in it, the power would be in a more usable range and the weight balance wouldn't be soo effected.

As for not being torquey down low, you'll be amazed at how easily it'll light the tyres up down low in the revrange.

you can merely drive a S4/5 rx7 around at 1500-2000rpm, especially if you get rid of the factory computer (they run really retarded timing in the lower RPM range).

do what you like, dont care about others, its your car

but from what ive read those rotories arent the lightest of motors. but the weight will at least be in a good spot

man go on to www.rotahavik.co.nz, heaps of guys on there will be able to inform you a bit better, as for that motor 3.5k.......considering its a wise idea to ditch the twins and $&#$% off the rats nest that runs them plus an ecu etc, for 3.5k you could get a better motor than that

thats supposed to say you can happily drive a S4/5 around at a mere 1500-2000rpm.......

the factory ecu idles at around 5-7 degrees BTDC, with a afertmarket computer ya set them around 15 BTDC at idle, and you get heaps more bottom end outta them

403hp with that sized turbo is missing a few ponies

Mk3 + 20B would be a worth while money pit

The "no torque" thing comes from V8 days and seems to have carried on until now. A 13B-MSP (NA Renesis) would be a giggle a minute in a AE86 type thing :D

I have seriously thought about using the Renesis motor! Its essentially a revised 13B & can achieve 49% higher output due to a port redesign amongst other things. There were two versions available, the first produced 212Hp & the second 232Hp!! Thats equivalent power to the 7M-GTE and it doesn't even utilize a turbo, not bad for a motor that meets LEV (Low emissions vehicle) standards!!

If you can find one with a 6spd box, loom & ECU attached ill be real keen! Haven't seen one come up on TradeMe yet, will ask around a bit.
