Not sure if it is true, but another petrol increse looming?!

Postby bbq1988 » Tue Sep 23, 2008 4:38 pm

I have just heard from a friend (she is usualy right about these things)

that petrol is raising 20c over night!

I Hope this isnt true :( $2.3x per litre for 98 might make me sell my car! (might, not likely but might)

we will see what happens tonight.

Cheers.

Sell a car due to petrol prices? Petrol is still relatively cheap in NZ

i'd be very suprised given the current climate if petrol went up. Any excuse for the oil companies is good enough though I guess..

Probably people just speculating (read: panicing) because the price of a barrel went up by $16 or $18 overnight. It'll probably slowly go down though, cause its more than likely just a spike.

EDIT: that spike was only with one of the suppliers, the other main one only went up a $1 or so.

Umm wasn't 98 already over $2.30 a couple of months ago? I'm sure it was that high? I paid $2.119 about an hour ago :)

It was on the news this morning with both figures, but yeah they did focus on the fact that its the highest increase ever even though the other supplier had barely moved.

Thats just the way "the news" works.

Eitherway I won't stop buying petrol.

im sure petrol cant raise 20c overnight??

(this applies to small towns, atleast >>) the petrol at the gas station costs them ~96c and they sell it for $1, in the morning its still the same petrol and still costs them 96c, they wont change the price to $1.20.

they can only make a price increase when the delivery truck delivers petrol that has a higher cost than the last lot.

so if the price of oil went up, it would still take a while for the petrol to reach NZ and the pumps.

im sure im right, if im wrong; &$#% off.

It's not the garages that get the sweet margin, its the government and their tax on tax

the whole thing is a crock anyway - any excuse to jack the prices up. petrol is not directly related to crude oil prices anyway, its more to do with growing demand coupled with limited refining capacity. crude prices are just a convenient scapegoat for oil companies to continue posting record profits despite world economy doom & gloom etc. but like slideways said, gotta have it!

I'm sorry, but what information are you basing this on?

Last I checked, comparitively, petrol in both the US and Australia was still significantly cheaper than what we pay in NZ.

I wouldn't put it past petrol companies at all to raise the price 20c overnight, I will be amused if it happens, but mostly because we're a captive market, we have no "choice" about what we pay, our only option is to stop using our cars as much as we do. This is primarily what the government is trying to achieve, and while it sounds like conspiracy bullshit, it would not surprise me at all to find out that there is an increase in the tax on petrol. Along with other great incentives like frontal impact compliance, exhaust noise controls and emissions laws, we can all thank our Labour government for flushing our ability to own/drive/modify the cars we love right down the toilet.

If there was a decent public transport system in this town, I'd probably use it. But paying nearly the same amount as I spend on gas, for the *privilege* of walking to a bus station, waiting in the rain and wind for a bus thats either gone past early, or is running late, then jumping onto a crammed public transport vehicle (be it bus or train) to take LONGER than it takes me to drive in a car to work... the incentive just isn't really there for me...

Wasn't based on any hard facts, just what I had heard. The UK was my main example. At over a pound a litre  My parents found out the wallet ripping affects that has when you fill up then get the bill in NZ dollars 8O

But here ya go. I'm certainly happy to not live in Sierra Leone where its nearly $5US/L

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrol_prices

sort by US$/L and check where NZ is, until it gets more 'relatively' expensive here, I still stand by my comment.

last time i heard from someone who was in usa it was the equivalent to like NZ$1.20 per litre!

They still drive very BIG cars in USA remember!

also NZ is the only country where petrol prices go up within a couple of days of price of barrel going up.
In Aus they can't put the price up for a couple of weeks or so. Saves them from ripping off people if the price of barrel peaks over a couple of days...
