swapping chassis tags

i know what you're all thinking, but im just wanting to clarify because i've only heard of people doing it because cars are stolen etc...

...but even if there is no police interest (or any other for that matter) in either vehicle, swapping chassis tags is still "frowned upon" right?

and don't bother responding with "do it anyway, it'll be sweet au" :lol:

could say that about anything, but after the amount of work put into the car its not worth the risk to make the body worthless :(

thats why u dnt cut the old tag out, u just use some extreamly strong adhesive to stick it over top and smooth it out... that way if u get busted u just take the other tag off and theres the orig number...

dont just cut the tag big out, do the hole width of the firewall and down to a crease or fold etc

But only if its a must. Oh and check, recheck and triple check there is nothing wrong/owing/on system for the tags you are using

Not hard to do or get someone to do a clean weld, esp round the seam. The trouble will probably to get it to look as rough as original :D

when my brothers ute got pinkied he had to fix rust in the cab and it was more ecconomical to put a whole new cab on it, being a pinky we had to take it through VTNZ so we asked the warrent man what we could do about it to keep the original rego, he told us that we could swap the tag (just a single one that was rivited on) and call it a rust repair (saying that we replaced the rusty metal with new metal)

if you do a good job of the "rust repair" and own both vehicles i cant imagine it being a big issue.

BUT, all this is opinion, and nothing i have said can be used in a testing station or court of law

some old cars ie datsun utes, have riveted on tags, would make for easy swapping about :lol:

i swwapped my old toranas tagsover so i didnt need to recert the car gotit spraied same colour so was all good

If it is worth as much to you as you say then do it the right way and get the car a new vin then it is as legal as you get.

keep the chassis number, cut around it, throw away the rest of the car,
fit a new body shell around the chassis number?

I know that, was a smart answer,

but how much can you change on a car before it's considered a reshell?

I know at Dad's work they put 2 front guards, two rear guards, a roof and a firewall in a 2 month old car under insurance as a repair.

How much more before it considered a re-shell?
