WW1 plane crash

Did anyone else see this on the news this morning? It was about a WW1 plane replica that crashed near Dunedin IIRC. Only caught a glimpse of the crashed plane but I swear i could see a TVIS manifold!

Bluetop 4age WW1 plane! Fck yeah :lol:

Might go have a look on stuff and see if there is any info.

EDIT: this might need to be in multimedia... mods feel free.

now thats extreme - looks like it came down alright / not too harsh.

isnt it common for the subaru boxers to be used in custom aircraft now?

ODT newspaper said the drivebelt snapped and the propeller lost power.

Never seen this plane before. I live about 5mins drive from where the plane went down and 5mins the other way to the airfield it left from and I see and hear everything that leaves that airfield.

Lucky the guy wasn't hurt.

Good job on the Force Landing With Out Power.

I think that's why it's better to use 6L flat 4 direct drive than a friggin' car engine to power your plane.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

They typically use Rotax flat engines. They're designed for the higher altitude.
Personally, I don't think a 4AGE would be suitable at all for flying, unless it were turbo'ed

I think its only a 3/4 size plane & a microlight, and those guys use all sorts of weird and wonderful engines to run their planes, rotaries, old beattle engines, Subaru boxer engines, pretty much anything they can get that's cheap and reliable
Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

The thing is that props don't need to spin at 6k rpm, the tips will reach supersonic speeds and all sorts of weird stuff happens.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

I think they use some sort of belt and pulley arrangement to run them at low speeds, i remember going to a small airshow last year and they had some guy talking about his homebuilt with a Nissan engine
