Not a toyota but, can you identify this motor and gearbox

Postby xsspeed » Thu Nov 20, 2008 4:26 pm

Got heaps of landie and holden parts, trying to figure out which goes with which.

Any idea what this gearbox is off, I had assumed it was the 1978 Holden Premier but maybe not?

This is the V8 thats sitting there, anyone know if its a GM/Holden or Rover one by looking at that?

I never thought of it, and wasnt there when this container was opened, but has been suggested that motor is not a 'vee' anything, but a slant 4

Maybe I was too premature in assuming its a v8?!?!?

need more pics!!!!

if it is indeed a slant 4....

the ugly filler point and hoses, plus long looking dipstick has got me thinking bedford van 2.4 donk...

vauxhall vivas had a horrible slant 4 but this looks a bit bulky....
pugeot 504's i believe slanted the other direction...

Could be a Bedford 2.3 Slant 4.

A hot version of that engine was used in the HSR2300 Chevette rally cars.

Sorry, you're right. It did seem a little harsh, it was only meant as light hearted humour. Sorry STRX7! Actually the more I study that pic the more it does look like an 8, it does look like a rocker cover on the other side. CF bedford motors were overhead cam with the dizzy on the front. They had a terrible setup where the points were under the advance weights. Yuck. Its not a holden v8, they had the thermostat housing on the front top and the mech fuel pump on the side. Nor is it a p76 either.

Is this a petrol engine?

From the pipes running over the rocker cover, and what looks like an injector at the front of the engine, I'm wondering if it might be a diesel :?

Pretty sure we have nailed it on oldschool as being a 6.2 or 6.5 ltr Chevy diesel V8.

Any other thoughts on the gbox? I take it from strx7 that it is from a holden then?

Don't think it's a Turbo 350, looks more like a Turbo 400. In which case it could be from anything ranging from a truck to a Ferrari ;)

Looks like the setup used in a Zezil Ambo - V8 CHEV - basically a petrol engine converted to diesel and they are shit!

Yes that is the engine. It was fitted to Ambulance vehicles for a number of years. We were having them rebuilt every 18-22,000km. They are not very strong engines.
