MR2 on trademe, with a V6

Interesting.

Looks like a really rough, standard example of a Gen 1 ... then I read the listing to find out why they reckoned such a manky looking vehicle rated a buy now of $6k.

I read the listing, and it has a 3.0 V6 fitted.

That could be kind of cool. Although, me being a non mechanic, it'd cost an arm and a leg to do since I'd have to pay somebody to do everything.

Would be interesting to buy a GT with a blown engine, and fit the 3.0 into it. Make a fun competition car I'd suspect. More grunt than the 2.0 non turbo, and better throttle response than the 2.0 turbo.

Wasn't there a guy on here who'd done it? Possibly from Palmy?

Pretty sure its the Windom motor so would be cheap enough.

Yeah, Nathan. I think he's Mr_Monkey on here.

nah he's talking about brett aka dvsmr2 from palmy. there are a few in nz at the moment (at least 5 that i know of) i would have thought the v6 would scoot along to something better than a 14.8 @ 92mph though....that's not far off the factory 3S-GE it replaced

I think it would be quite a nice package really, though I'd love to know how much it would cost as a drive in drive out conversion 8)

Not exactly the cheapest engines. And then there is the ever present head gasket issue. Rather have the 3S-GTE to be honest

To be fair they're not a good motor in stock form really, they have no top end at all, so totally not suited to drags.

Not a turbo 3SGE, but a 3SGTE.

The 3.0 V puts out about 167KW same as stock gen 1 turbo, but with more torque and of course no lag.

Not being to much of a mechanic, Id be more inclined to get a Turbo MR2 and spend a little on core mods to extract more out of the 3SGTE.

To get anything further from the V6 would cost alot more and everything would have to be custom, where as the 3SGTE has plenty of bolt on mods available.

It puts out no where near 167kw, it makes less torque and you have to rev it harder to get that less torque.

It makes 189PS and 199lb/ft of torque @ 4600rpm. Even the standard '89-'91 3SGTE makes 225PS and 225lb/ft @ 3200rpm.

14.8 @ 92mph?

    Well done, thats a standard 3SGE time and trap speed.

The 3VZ V6 belongs in a Camry, not an MR2. Its a lazy sedan motor.

apparently its a popular conversion in the states, i guess the JDM turbo MR2 didnt make it there in many numbers?

though by the sounds its not much different to the 3SGE

It has been done in the US because the motors are plentiful and the n/a SW20 is equipped with the asthmatic 5SFE making barely 120hp.

They get a 200hp version of the turbo sw20.

This company in the USA does 3VZFE swaps, some supercharged.

I'm sure I found another place that was using 1MZFE and making a few Ferrari replicas.

Yeah that explains why the one I went in felt like it had bugger all top end, felt really torquey up to 4000rpm though - if it carried the same way into the top end it'd be quite impressive.

But they don't :(

wrong side of the river..... Woodsport is in the UK .....

for some thing different its a sweet conversion...
the stock 3VZ-FE is not flash.... but give it a bit of boost and it will help it to motor along.

i actualy have an expensive coffee cup holder on my desk at work....
a 4V6 mount for the 3VZ-FE for the SW20. im going to do the conversion next year, once the wedding is over & find a wyndom.

while autocrossing zero lag would be a good thing, although this would also be achieved by just using a 3sge

considering i brought a sw20 turbo in perfect running condition just dereg in the weekend for 800 bucks i would consider a v6 swap pretty sad and costly

plus lots of people using S gearboxes...yuk
