Postby headshotnz » Tue May 19, 2009 10:34 pm

Hey guys, Got green stickered for my exhaust, yay, we all now that. [posted a topic not so long ago..

Car was re-vinned not so long ago (jan or feb?)

Then put a rps exhaust on, was loud as shit, got green stickered, fair enough...

Put original exhaust on, and they said its still to loud...?????? wtf.

So what do i do now?

Make it quieter, surely that was obvious???

Unless its a 100% factory exhaust you won't have a leg to stand on most likely.

What part of the test do you fail?

Is this being measured with a spot meter or the official gear?

Original like how it was when the car came from the factory?
Or original like how it was when you bought it off some guy who used to get WOFs no problem?

Put an properly muffled exhaust on.

standered but converted to one pipe, but quiter muffler and coby in the middle.

passed its vin check fine.

i put that exhaust when i got the car because the other one had holes every were..

I made sure it was mad to specification so it wasnt loud.

After i got the re-vin i put my old rps that i had hanging round, green stickered of course :D

So put the other muffler back on, but now aparently its to loud.

its only just louder then standered, but most woulnt notice.

so you obviously can't call it standard then can you.

If VTNZ failed you on the green sticker, it obviously* means it's over 95dB so you would now have to go get the exhaust certified 8)

apparently less than 15% of exhausts that sit the actual exhaust cert pass. and they charge a substantial recheck fee!

Wouldn't be surprised! My exhaust isn't what i would call excessive but when it was tested it spiked to something like 92db and the average can't be more than 93db!

Yet to know of someone who's actually done it

Not surprising since I doubt most people do anything to their system before getting it checked because "It's not all that loud"

I had a chat to my neighbour (highway patrol) about it when it first came in(the exhaust cert). and he said all officers were notified that if the system is stil to loud (to their opinion) they can sticker it.

What they need to do is put seals on the exhaust when it's certed. Much like they do on bits and pieces that can't be touched between rounds or pre check for motor sport things. Although i can't see it being introduced as it would mean that the officer doing the check would have to get out the torch and compare the seal with the cert - not likely to see any of them getting under the car at 2am in the morning to check a seal number.
BTW if you don't drive like an idiot everywhere or blip down change or down change early you can be fairly quiet - i know this as i used to have a car with a staight through 2" no mufflers at all and i never got pulled up for it untill i went for a wof. Also a big tip like most rps's have is a magnet for getting pulled up - get a smaller tip and you'l probably get away with more.

I got a ticket for a noisey exhaust awhile back, went and got it checked, 4000rpm 96.5dBa, with baffel in 95.8dBa. Cant say it was a fair test though, they guy was telling me how sensitive it is ra ra ra and yet he tested it between a brick wall and a garage door........? That was from the only exhaust certifier in CHCH at the time, not sure about know though.....

All in all, we will never win. Ever.

Abit off topic. But good luck with that :D

You win by having a factory exhaust.

But pyro, the reason he needs a loud exhaust is the massive amounts of power his car makes.

I heard it runs on POWERTHIRST

Maybe I just don't fit into the cool crowd, ive just never seen the joy of having a loud exhaust on the car. They suck on long car trips, attract unwanted attention and the sound of most of them....well yeah only the owner usually is the only one who actualy thinks it sounds any good.

Yep!! Some cars sound cool a bit louder, I absolutely love my mates 180SX, it sounds sick, but your average skyline, corolla, etc sounds crap...
