Undecided on Brake Pads

Hey guys I've just bought myself some big superstrut twinpot brakes for my bzg. They're all cleaned up, unsiezed and new caliper kits done
Which pads do you recommend? The car is mainly on the street but I plan to attend some track days next year
I would like to run Bendix Ultimates but they don't make them in a DB1352 :(
So it seems my options are
    Normal road pads
    Mintex 1166 (or another compound if they do it)
    TRD black

Especially keen on comments on the TRD pads

You should be able to get bendix ultimate compound put on existing backing plates
The torque band is wide and the road is narrow

cheap and pretty good for the price.
if you cook them at the track upgrade then, if you don't you've saved yourself a couple hundred, if you even make it to the track.

TRW/Lucas pads are good for road and occasional track use.

0800racebrakes do the same thing but I don't know if they can do that compound
I have sent them an email asking... Waiting to hear back

I could go the way of standard/genuine pads... How scary it it losing ya brakes in a Motorsport event?

Any comments on the Ted ones anyone?

I has TRD black, which is compatible with AE111 calipers.

I haven't pushed it that hard to know if it fades or not, but a lot of dust.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Can vouch for Bendix ultimate being a good street/track pad - and cheap.


You should be able to get them for the AE111 from BNT - slap them in and go hard. If they don't make a pad for the S/S AE111, get a similar one and shape it to suit on a bench grinder.

I would'nt touch Mintex 1166s with a barge pole I've been doing track-days in my Supra for about 10 years and they are the only pad that has physically melted onto the rotor all the way back to the backing plate,like chunks of brake pad which caused me to go off the front straight only time its happend using those pads I also got from Racebrakes so I'm not a real big fan.

If you go the TRD route you'd be better off using the TRD Reds they have a higher temp rating than the Blacks at about 650 vs the about 450 for the Blacks.They are a good pad don't give the intial bite more of a smooth progressive feel through the pedal but work I'd rate those over the Mintex pads for sure and alot kinder on rotors.What sucks is they cost abit of coin so be prepared to pucker up.

The other option I'd suggest is stick with a set of pads for the road and get a track-day specific pad this is the route I've chosen and use Hawk HT-10s for the track.They give a really good intial bite when the pedal is pushed which is all good and you can modulate the pedal from there.Negative of them is there quite dusty and are really hard on rotors but I guess if you want the most out of your car theres always a trade-off.

Good luck theres boat loads of options out there and I hope this helps.

+1 these pads are an awesome i never get any fade on the track and they are good for the road too. and comparitively cheap!!

have done 30min track sessions without any brake fade braking very late...

I've done it to a set of pads for ST185 calipers - they work well and are still going strong. You don't want to take too much meat off, so get something fairly similar to start with (the bendix book has drawings).

If you want a set of pads to do both well, the Hawk HP+ would be a way to go, but you'll spend about $290+gst on a pair. http://www.hawkperformance.com/performance/hpplus.php ... And they may not make them for your car.


If you're new to trackdays I wouldn't worry too much - just get out there and do it. Fit the best off-the-shelf pads you can find and go driving. It will help you find out what you need for track work before splashing out on a set of expensive pads.

... I remember that day... An escort, prelude and me were 3 wide into Toyota, and all of a sudden a Supra comes flying through.... Weaves past us and ends up in the tyres - could have ended much worse!

Where as I rate Mintex 1166 very highly for my Mitsi Mirage race car. My car is light, nimble and get around 170km down the straights at Manfeild and around 190ish km on the back straight of Taupo. They have been brilliant for the road and for the track. What you need to do is take into consideration your driving style and the weight of your car with your considerations.

A Supra is heavy (unlike your little BZG) with big power and asks a lot more from its braking systems. Also please please change [regularly] your brake fluid as that makes a huge difference to your braking abilities on the track. Think of your braking system as a whole not just the pad that hits the rotor... so many do this and find much fail when putting the car under a stressed track situation.

I'm with 2jayzgte on the Mintex 1166 they are rubbish, quickest wearing track pad I had, couldn't handle the temps generated & cost a bomb, would never go there again.

I'm using Wilwood front and rear, heaps of compounds and are great performance and price. Have lasted ages. That's on a dedicated track car

You'd need to cut them for your application though

Where do you get the Wilwood pads from Dunny? I'm in the market for a set for the 86 at the moment.


I've also got a set of 1166 pads for my AW11. They've done a few trackdays and are starting to crack (they seem to be bad for that). They work well from cold and are a good autocross/club sprint pad but I wouldn't buy them again.
